You're getting awfully close to one of my favorite topics here - the ills of American (and global) consumerism.

It amazes me how ready the world is to accept new things as necessities when they weren't even on the radar a few years ago. How many people walk around campuses nationwide with $400 Apple iPod's? How many people drive cars that are less than 2 years old (and how many of those cars get abyssmal gas mileage)? How many of us shop at the Gap and Old Navy despite our knowledge of their attrocious human rights records? It scares me, truthfully.

What good are we doing ourselves with all of this? None - we are creating a fake economy based on percieved rather than actual need and as long as we do that we will see deeper troughs, and bigger bubbles in the economy over time - a scary ride indeed!
