No asshole, the movie got that from the Marine Corp.

The actor who played the DI was in fact, a real DI (drill instructor) from the Marine Corp.

He now hosts a show called 'Mail Call' on the History channel, that answers military questions sent thru the internet.

He was the main reason that 'Full Metal Jacket' so truly represented what boot camp was like at Parris Island. Except that boot camp was harder, and the DI's yelled more.
