About two weeks ago I was sitting on the club house lawn of the Augusta National Golf Club, having lunch and sipping on a mint julip (their signature drink), and it occured to me to ponder the conundrum of guns and protection from an oppressive government. Looking around me I saw a group of men and women with good reason to fear government oppression. Tax day was fast approaching (4-15-03) and no doubt the represented tax burden that surrounded me was unspeakably immense. And what do you imagine the weapon of choice for this group to fend off a government entent on seizing their hard won gain: guns or CPAs? I know for a fact no one around me was packing except for the plentiful presence of agents for the very same government against whose oppression we all must fight. So was this location free from said oppression, or was it a hot bed of oppression?

And here's another question. Is the necessity for guns tied to the individual or to the resources and capital the individual represents? I know for a fact that the government intent on oppressing us only cares for the capital resources we command. That's what tax day revolves around, and if that isn't oppression I don't know what is. But isn't there a quid pro quo that comes with tax day? There certainly was reciprocity taking place that sunny saturday afternoon at the Masters. The government was bent to the will of those entities putting on that little soiree and those less enfranchised were denied entrance outright.

Perhaps guns, and it's mechanism in American society the Second Amendment, are entended for the freedom of the little guy? Those that lack the resources to command the true weapons of freedom. I wonder if Warren Buffet has an "arsenal of freedom"? Call me a cynic, but I imagine he does, but why is it I don't imagine it has much to do with guns?
