Great game. If you are beating down the enemy they run just like the French are used to.

There are several factors from which I have seen them flee. A group of 100 peasants staring down about 5 formations of 100 Byzantium Swordmen backed up by 2 groups of 40 Kataphraktoi (heavily armored horsemen) caused them to run without a battle. Hitting a low morale unit with a charge by heavy horsemen can break them almost immediately.

The game really has some good checks and balances. Spearmen, as would be expected are pretty good at knocking back horsemen, but suck in close quarter combat with Byzantium Swordmen. Byzantium Swordmen are generally cut down by charging heavy horsement, but I use them a lot effectively. If I'm heavily outmatched in a defensive battle, I lure them into the woods where my Byzantium Swordmen can make the most of the cavalry's limited mobility in brush.

I had one battle where I was outmached about 1500 to about 500 by my troops were primarily made up of Byzantium Swordmen and Varangian Guard units (sort of an elite axemen unit). We killed about 1200 of them before they retreated. I lured them into a forest, and while my swordmen delt with the spearmen, feudal sergeants, urban militia and peasents, my Varangian Guard chopped up the cavalry. I only lost about 200 total.
