And it does suck you in. The battles can last for hours, but this depends on a tradeoff. You can take your time, maneuver your forces around and hit the enemy from several sides. This can take a long time. Or you can charge your guys right in (especially if you have higher quality troops or superior numbers). If you don't want to worry with the battles, you can have the computer autoresolve it, but if you get some practice, you can usually lose less than half of what the computer will calculate if you do it yourself.

This game combines "empire building" with RTS elements. There are a lot of units you can get with very different specialties. Also, strategy really does play a point. I've refought battles using the same troops and different strategies and this resulted in very different outcomes. Charge a group of knights into a line of spearmen, and the knights get speared. Charge a line of spearman into a line of Byzantine Infantry (armed with swords) and at first the spearman do good, but then start losing badly in the close quarters combat.

This game has espionage, assassinations, and your generals get better as they win (or worse as they lose).

The only thing I don't like all that much about it, is that a province can only work on one structure per year, regardless of resources and population. Whether this is just an upstart swordsmith, or a grand citadel doesn't matter. Of course the citadel will take longer. Buildings really do begin to take a long time, but there is a cheat you can use to complete them in a year. This cheat applies to all factions on the board (even the computer), so it really isn't a cheat as everyone benefits from it. I always use this cheat, or things go slow.
