But the Ten Commandments still apply to you right? Those are the ones that Moses went up on Mt. Sinai and received directly from God. Thou shall not steal, kill, yada yada yada. The one I was refering to is the "thou shall not take the Lord your God's name in vain". That means you don't make jokes by invoking God's name (or referring to him).

Believe it or not back when America was first founded by Europeans it was very strictly Christian. If you were overheard taking the Lord's name in vain you'd be sentenced to all sorts of unusual punishments. From being locked in public "stocks" in the city square so that everyone in the community could laugh at you and help mete out God's justice (the nice one's threw over ripe tomatoes, the mean ones threw rocks), to being strapped into a chair on the end of a long crane-like pole and being dunked under water for a few minutes. The really harsh judges would sentence you to five minutes submerged. If you lived or died it was ascribed to God's will (after all you wouldn't be in the chair in the first place unless you hadn't used God's name incorrectly). And of course there was always the old stand by public flogging with a cat-o-ninetails.

Come to think of it there are a lot of similarities between early colonial america and modern day Islamic theocracies.
