Widespread Gang-Rape of Boy Slaves

Sudan, July 15, 2002: During a recent fact finding trip to Southern Sudan, Freedom Now World News discovered overwhelming evidence that young black, boy slaves are repeatedly gang-raped by their Arab masters. While previous reports on slavery have focused mainly on the gang-rape of female slaves, sociologist and investigative reporter, Maria Sliwa received testimony from numerous boy victims of rape.

Preliminary analysis of over 1,200 interviews with liberated slaves reveals that over 70% of females over the age of twelve were raped while in bondage, while over 15% of boy slaves over the age of six were sexually abused by their captors or members of their masters households.

Arab Masters Can Do as They Please

MADHOL, Sudan (AP) - Stacks of money pass from the Christian
foreigner to the Muslim trader, an exchange anxiously watched by a 13-
year-old girl with diamonds of sweat on her brow.
The Sudanese trader, his lap buried by currency worth $13,200, waves
carelessly to free his merchandise - 132 slaves.
Akuac Malong, the young Dinka girl, is among them. She has spent
seven years - more than half her life - enslaved by an Arab in northern
Sudan.
Her brilliant smile belies the beatings, near-starvation, mutilation and
attempted brainwashing she endured. ``I thought it would be better to die
than to remain a slave,'' Akuac says.
Trafficking in humans has resurged with civil war in Africa's largest and
poorest country, said John Eibner of Christian Solidarity International, a
humanitarian group that bought Akuac's freedom.

4,968 Sudanese Slaves Freed by Christian Solidarity International (CSI)
CSI Urges UNCHR to Condemn Sudan for Mass Enslavement

Geneva/Zurich/Nairobi, March 21, 2000.

Between 9-19 March, a further 4,968 black African slaves were freed during a clandestine visit to the borderlands between northern and southern Sudan by CSI representatives John Eibner (USA), Gunnar Wiebalck (Germany), Jane Roy and Glen Pearson (Canada); Dr. Hamouda Fathelrahman Bella of the Sudan Human Rights Organization (Cairo); and independent journalists.

Redeemed slaves provided testimony regarding the many gross abuses of human rights that are inherent in Sudanese slavery: During the raids, villages are torched, men are shot dead, the elderly are beaten and abused, and women, children, cows, goats and food stores are captured as war booty. The women and child slaves are forced to walk for days to the North. On the long journey, beatings, public executions and gang rape are a commonplace. Once in the North, the slaves are divided among their captors. They are routinely subjected to forced labor, sexual abuse - including female genital excision - forced Islamization, beatings, minimum food rations, death threats and racist verbal abuse.
