Of course you don't know any of my cousins (especially the ones from Alabama)!

Anyway...

The thought had occurred to me that if we did get Saddam why in the hell would they pretend otherwise? The only thing that makes sense to me though is that the folks still in power are more scared of losing control than of facing our forces, and hope to be able to negotiate something out with us and maintain some semblance of their former position. There is a precedent for that in our involvement in Iraq. After all we let them all stay in charge after GWI (Gulf War 1).

Regimes like this are totally founded on the notion of one person (i.e. Saddam, Stalin, Hitler, Castro, etc.). Remove that man and the regime crumbles. As long as the figurehead remains control can be maintained (even if it’s a mummified old fart like Castro or Hitler’s brain being kept alive in a jar somewhere in Argentina). Perhaps Saddam's subordinates realize that without Saddam they are totally out of a job and that certainly doesn't bode well for their continued survival after the war is over? Also if the reports are true and Saddam's government ruled through fear and terror, there isn't going to be much popular support if that government comes apart at the seams. Given that reality Saddam's subordinates are bound to be more afraid of their own people and internal opposition than of our more altruistically minded military!
