Subject: Carshalton match Report

With reference to Saturday's match, I would find it hard to add much to what Winston Smith has already posted. It was not a good game. Took me until the 38th minute before I wrote anything in my notebook - a season record. And even then it was a miskick. By the end of the match I had written less than two pages (including substitutions and bookings), also a record. However, for those of you wishing to relive the excitement, here is my Non-League Paper report.
****
A first-half penalty settled this disappointing south London derby in which both teams found it hard to create scoring opportunities.
With Croydon’s surprise away victory at promotion chasers Bromley in midweek, the home team started the match with a renewed confidence. But with Carshalton determined to kick-start their flagging championship campaign it was a match full of effort but little in the way of goalmouth action.
It wasn’t until the 41st minute that either team really threatened. A Carshalton free-kick deep into the area was headed back and as the ball flew around the six yard area, Tommy Ellis was adjudged to have handled the ball. Darren Hay made no mistake with his spot-kick.
The second period was only a marginal improvement on the first. Michael Johnson tested Rob Frankland in the Athletic goal with a couple of curling free-kicks, whilst Kunle Olusessi shot wide from outside the area.
Billy Jackson had the home side’s best chance with a shot through a crowded area that Stuart Searle saved well.
Olusessi should have wrapped it up for the visitors, but after working the ball around Frankland he appeared distracted by the attention of the Athletic defenders and shot wide.
