Subject: Hayden Interview

A pre-match interview with the Manager.

Q: Can you confirm the squad for Saturday.

HB: The squad for Saturday is as follows:

Frankland, Davenport, Brown, Johnson, Cecil, McDonald, Waite, Gibson, Evans, Quinton, Ellis, Fowler, Jackson, Lock, Alger, Stassinos, Golding.

Gavin Harrison is away on business but will return for the Worthing game. I am pleased to have Danny Cecil available after his “mid-season break” and Byron Brown returns after his suspension. Jason McDonald is the only doubt, with a slight ligament problem. We are hoping he will be fit though.

Q: How big is this game.

HB: Massive. We all see this game as, not only a great opportunity to go 8pts clear of Molesey, but a chance to catch teams higher the table. The bottom half of the league is really close at the moment. For example, Met Police are in 15th but are only 4pts ahead of Croydon Athletic. Our aim remains to finish the season as high as possible. If we have a good run-in, we can still end our first campaign at this level in a respectable league position.

Q: How difficult will Saturday’s game be? Are you expecting three points?

HB: Of course we are hoping to win three points and will approach the game confident of winning. At the same time though, we are aware of the improvement Banstead have made. During the last two months, Saturday’s opponents have enjoyed a run of good results and will no doubt be looking to win the game themselves. With players such as Mitchell, Dennis, Cormack and Greenaway, they will clearly pose a threat and as a team, we will have to be at our best to beat them.

Q: How much progress have Croydon Athletic made in recent weeks.

HB: Since the poor result at Imber Court, the team have made positive strides. We have worked on the training ground to make the team more solid as a unit and, having conceded one goal in open play in 270 minutes of football, we are achieving that. At Bromley, I thought we played very well to beat a team who were previously undefeated in 16 games, Carshalton only beat us from the penalty spot and on Saturday, the team battled hard to earn a good point at The Runnymede Stadium. So, in answer to your question, we are making gradual progress, but there remains plenty of room for improvement.

Q: There has been speculation of new signings on the way. Is there any truth in the rumour?

HB: The Croydon Advertiser speculated that were close to signing Paul Scott and Michael Ebanks, but that rumour never came from anyone at this Club. Yes, of course we have enquired about players. Like all managers at this level, we are always looking to improve our squad. However, I would prefer wait until the right players become available, rather than sign short term answers. Besides, I have complete confidence that the players at the Club will steer the Croydon Athletic to a position of safety. Equally, don’t forget, the return to fitness of the likes of Stassinos and Johnson is the equivalent of signing two new players anyway.
