Condolences to the family and friends of Phyllis Ann Kessler Lynn Sacho.

It is with great sadness upon learning of the unexpected death of former Miss Wisconsin 1949, Phyllis Ann Kessler, who passed away at age 90 on March 7, 2022 in De Pere, just 11 months after she lost her second husband Gregory James Sacho on April 15, 2021:

It was on this Miss Wisconsin fan message forum where this posted message was made on her 90th birthday back on May 19, 2021.

This Thursday would have been her 91st birthday.

Phyllis Ann Kessler won her first pageant title when she became Miss Green Bay 1949 on the eve of her 18th birthday on May 18, 1949. Just nine days after her local pageant victory, Phyllis competed in the 1949 Miss Wisconsin pageant in Milwaukee and won the state crown over four other statewide contestants including first runner-up Miss Kenosha, Gaynor (Gay) Elizabeth Phillipson.

Phyllis, an accomplished baton twirler, won a $2,000 scholarship and the chance to compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, where she was among the 15 semi-finalists. The winner was Miss Arizona, Jacquelyn Joy Mercer.

The following year, Phyllis was honored to be a special guest at the 1950 Miss America pageant where she was bestowed honors and a ride on a decorated float during the Miss America parade on the Boardwalk.

It is safe to say (at least Phyllis did) that had it not been for Elsie (Elyse) Sutter, who was at the 1949 Miss Wisconsin pageant, Phyllis may not have been chosen as Miss Wisconsin.

Phyllis credits Elyse (who was Miss Milwaukee 1944 and Miss Wisconsin 1944) for many helpful tips and late night coaching at the hotel in Milwaukee just before the pageant. Years later, they would judge at local pageants around Wisconsin, and each coached prospective contestants in the 1950s and 1960s.

In later years, Phyllis married Lyle Lynn in 1951, and they had three sons. She also co-directed the regional Miss Bayland pageant which sent three winners (1962--1964) to the Miss Wisconsin pageant in Oshkosh; as well as co-producing the 1973 Miss Green Bay pageant, and attending many future city and state pageants.

On October 15, 1999, Phyllis Ann Lynn married Oshkosh native Gregory James Sacho in De Pere where and they lived in until their untimely deaths.

She especially enjoyed attending the 2012 Miss Wisconsin pageant in June 2012 which featured Wisconsin's two Miss America winners (Terry Anne Meeuwsen and Laura Marie Kaeppeler) and two dozen other past Miss Wisconsin winners to celebrate the 50th year anniversary of the Miss Wisconsin pageant being held in Oshkosh.

We shall always remember Phyllis Ann Kessler who was one of the biggest supporters of the Miss Green Bay and Miss Wisconsin program.

Phyllis Ann Kessler Lynn Sacho
(forever Miss Wisconsin 1949)
