Luckily, the South Dakota governor knows more than the doctors.

Was essential. Now it’s closed.

Noem says we need to stay the course which is what. Do nothing and hope for the best. She already worried about opening the plant back up.

It is geting to rural areas later. Now, it is in the acceleration phase there, not topping off at all.

If you look at the data from the rest of the state you will see this is a very small geographic area with a population that refuses to comply with the EO already handed down. Handing down yet another will not make them change their ways. The mayors and county leaders need take control of their populace and stop blaming others for their shortcomings and inaction

Just scratched Smithfield ham off my grocery list. "We ain't skeered a no virus! No sir!"

I don't know all the governors of The United States, but the second I read the headline, I knew she was a republican.

And yet people still think gathering is okay.

Wow...who didn’t see that coming?

Mark3 hours ago
Wow, this all sounds so familiar for some reason.

That’s a risky game she’s playing. And for what?

"Our health care system can handle what's coming at us." Famous last words.

This didn’t need to happen. These employees should be issued N95 masks, face shields and shoe covers.

Why do we even have 2 Dakotas? 4 Senators from the Dakotas represent about 1.6 million people, whereas 2 Senators from CA represent 40 million. This is why the USA is ruled by a minority party.

Lalala33 minutes ago
Normal States sheltered in place. Slow states are going to cause problems. Your shelter in place starts in May don't come to states that followed orders.

Stacy D40 minutes ago
Even if she had a shelter in place order for her state, Smithfield would have been considered essential so the workers still would have been at work spreading the virus to each other.

What leadership --- Oh that would be the lack of. Elected officials are to look out for their people, I believe she failed in every aspect.

Noem is using the tRump playbook, deny everything and claim it is all good. More people will definitely die before she finally moves off dead center and takes it serious.

SMITHFIELD IS OWNED BY CHINA / DONT BUY

IBT7 hours ago
"meat processing plant". The articles does not bother to mention that businesses in the food chain are considered ESSENTIAL and would not have been shutdown even with a "stay at home" order.

Rollie4 hours ago
Here is an idea, merge North and South Dakota into 1 state and create a North and South California. Now that would certainly be more representative of the USA.

Viktor35 minutes ago
So similar to those that do have a stay at home order?

let me guess... Republican?

What does it take to REMOVE a gov that doesn't CARE for its citizens? Does she not BELIEVE in the COVID -19 virus? Wake up South Dakota. Get with it, and take care of your citizens. It really is sad you have so many CITIZENS dying. Demand that this governor SUPPORT its citizens or GET RID OF HER. Noem has blood in HER hands. Horrible situation. Make her WORK for you. I will never buy another Smithfield chicken until I know it will take CARE of its employees. Shame on the governor and shame on the SMITHFIELD corporation. How on earth can that company senior staff sleep at night knowing they have KILLED their employees and done NOTHING about it? This event will haunt them FOREVER. TAKE CARE OF EVERY ONE. WE ALL DESERVE TO LIVE. IT IS NOT JUST THE 1% people that should live in AMERICA.

So just how may cases of infection and how many deaths does it take to wake these people up? This is what happens when religious theology overtakes basic science, when the quest for a buck overtakes the preservation of life.

There's at least 10 times that many in the population spreading it daily!
These red state deniers are in way over their heads!

Republicans clearly are not equipped to handle a National Crisis like a Viral Pandemic, given Trump wasted six weeks denying it and spreading conspiracy theories to protect his reelection, and now even with all of the deaths Republicans are still thinking about the economy over human life.

One policy should not fit every state. She has 7 deaths from covid 19 in her state up to this point. Sounds like she is not acting out of fear.

1168 cases. 6 fatal. That's a mortality rate of 0.5%, or about the same as Flu which has a rate of 0.37%. No economic shut down, no loss of rights, fewer people out of work, and for the most part, people are free to live their lives. On balance, I would say that SD is doing just fine. Six people(we don't know their age, or co-morbidity) is a sad loss, but how many died from flu in SD during this season?
