Subject: John and Joshua Severs The Same Person?

Can any one tell me if John and Joshua Severs born about 1849 in Tyler W. V. are one person. He being JOHN SEVERS? Was it common back then to give two children the same name (Joshua) and they were both living? Two sons listed on 1850 Census of Tyler W.V. one Joshua b. 1840 Ohio and the other Joshua b. 1848-49 in W.V. Son of David Severs b.1814 Ohio and Hannah Briton Severs also b. in Ohio. Washington Archives have no record of a John Severs in the Civil War although his grave stone is marked CO A 14th Reg. W.V. Infantry. Son of David. Also all records of a Joshua b.1848-9 lead back to the one Joshua b.1840 Ohio. I have found no records of the second Joshua. Could the census be wrong and the 2nd Joshua is John? Does anyone know ?
