Lachesis woke suddenly, sat up and looked about. In the bedroll across the fire a man's snore proved her hired guard was a sound sleeper. So much for his keeping watch, she thought with distaste. Something had awoken her from her light sleep, she was determined to find what it was.
Her instincts told her to wake the guard, she quelled those voices and slipped silently out of her bedroll, grabbing the guard's extra sword that lay by their packs. Trust Daranon to see to it that they'd be safe even if her guard's sword broke. She couldn't decide if that was pessimism or optimism, but she thanked him now for it, as much as she despised her money grubbing 'care-taker.' He only wished to keep her safe to keep taking her inheritance, slowly but surely.
She hefted the sword in her hand. A bit heavy, but she'd fought with worse. Few knew the extent of her training, which was one of the reasons she was calm and didn't feel the need to wake the guard. The other was the fact she despised him, the bastard sold his sword, with the hopeful attitude that she was part of the bargain. Next time he came close I'll run him through the groin, she decided, sick of his attitude.
She made her way to the edge of the clearing where she had spent the night. There is was again, the slightest rustle in the fallen, autmn leaves. She peered into the shadowed forest with the hope she could make something out to no avail, the sun had not even cleared the horizon yet and was of no aid to her.
The movement drew nearer, and she lifted her sword, prepared to defend herself, and swallowed, ready to call to the guard and see how well he could fight under short notice with a groggy head.
With a loud crunch of leaves, the movement stopped. Lachesis could just make out a shadow out of reach in front of her. "Chee-sis!" A voice hissed. She started, only to pause... that voice sounded familiar. No, it couldn't be.
"Tril?" She hissed back into the woods. The shadow nodded frantically, and in her minds eye she pictured the kender grinning broadly. For once she was silent, I wonder what determination that is taking.
This was her break. The snores of the guard met her ears, reminding her of where she was and where she was headed. To Abyss with Daranon and his winter home, she thought, to Abyss with his money-grubbing fat self.
She slid over to the fire, the years she had spent taking care not to wake Daranon's light sleeping personal guards not necessary but bored into her brain. She soundlessly lifted the guard's sword and scabbard from the place beside his head and tied the lighter sword to her belt. Her pack was ready, bedroll tucked in in less than it took the guard to snort and snore on.
About to leave the extra sword next to the guard she stopped and grinned maliciously. Let him learn some manners from the bandits. After his many attempts to take away what she did not freely wish to give (to him, anyway, she thought slyly,) he deserved what the forest gave to him.
She hurried into the woods, the kender Trillian bounding on ahead, taking care to make little noise. It was only when they had gotten out of hearing distance of the guard, who was still sound asleep, Lachesis figured, that the kender stopped, turned around, and opened her mouth.
"Chee... we missed you so much, I missed you so much! Ever so much wonderful stuff has happened since you were gone, some bad stuff too, which is why we were looking for you, but you know not all of it was bad.. Did I tell you about the time..."
Lachesis stopped her. "Another time, Tril. What bad stuff?" The continued to walk as Trillian explained that she had been wandering after she had parted ways with Lachesis, and met up with a group of men. She figured they were mercenaries, as they were of all different races, but in fact they were a group of friends on their way to Palanthas. She, much to their dismay, made herself part of their group.
They had found a cave in the mountains only half a mile away, and one of the men had seen Lachesis, and Tril had recognised her and gone to look when the others were just waking up. The hard luck they had fallen upon had been the fact that one of their number, a human by the name of Selvar, had been killed in the goblin attack.
Selvar wasn't the most personable of men, however he had been a mage and their best cook.
"I told them that it had to be you when they described the woman they had found," Tril continued, "and so I went looking for you...we need a mage now, you see, no matter what the others say about Selvar."
Yes, what other women her age have silvered-white hair? The Test had taken its toll, just as it had for others, though hers was not as horrible as many other stories. She had been returned her strength. That she thanked Nuitari and her Dark Queen for. But that she had just regained after years of being aided in walking, standing, bathing... The test had stripped her hair of its golden honey color and left her with the silver white locks of one frail beyond years. If one had not noticed her young face, one would say she could pass for sixty.
But her strength had returned, so she was forced to make the trip to Daranon's winter home on foot, as he was too miserly to spare a horse for her. Either horse or guard, and I choose guard, he tells her. Her black robes were in her pack, yet her spell components hung around her waist. Trillian had learned early not to touch them, and she was actually quite smart for a kender, Lachesis thought with a smirk.
The mountainside loomed ahead, and Trillian continued to walk forwards, towards a seemingly smoorh cliff face, lined with bushes.
"This is it!" She said to Lachesis. Sliding between two bushes, she disappeared. Lachesis moved to follow, but stopped. Tril has told them I'm a mage, she thought, but let them think what they will. First impressions last a long time.. Nuitari guide me, Dark Queen be at my side... Perhaps these 'adventurers' are in for more of a shock than innocent Tril has them prepared for.
