Subject: Don King Easy Company 506th Leaves Us

I seem to be a bringer of bad tidings at the moment, here's the report of the passing of another of Easy Company.

All,

I'm very sad to report that Don King has passed away, having made his final jump yesterday, 11 AUG 03. Don was a replacement who joined Shifty’s platoon in time for Bastogne.

Don King was a very generous, soft-spoken & extremely modest man who - typical of many E Company veterans – never mentioned his service in WWII to his family until only a few years ago. I feel that his life after the war was as heroic & inspiring as anything he did prior. He retired from Caterpillar after 40+ years of service & was married to his wife Marianna for 60+ years. He had one daughter & one grandson but – as I observed at the Emmy Awards – his extended family was huge & they all absolutely adored & revered him. To his credit, they are a gregarious, affectionate & closely bonded family. I'm comforted to know that Don was rewarded for his WWII service with a blessed & charmed post-war life.

To me, he was the most rare of American heroes. He served his country with distinction and did so quietly & without acknowledgement. He returned home to nothing but hard work, love & family. I pray for anyone out there whose happiness depends upon more than this.

Thank you God for the life of Donald L. King. May I be blessed with his kind of wealth.
