Matteson was 2Lt in A/505 (1st Battalion) There is evidence to suggest that he received a battlefield commission, and that he had some asociation with the 325th GIR.

Matteson was killed on 3JAN45 during 1/505s tactical movement ESE thru the line FOSSE-LA CHAPELLE. (As 325 was also part of this movement and was on the right flank of the 1/505 this could be the cause of the confusion as to his association with 325--but that is speculative.)

During the movement 505 suffered numerous casualties from friendly artillery fire (which devastated H Co) and 1/505 received the same on their side of the line coupled with intense German ground attacks.

It is recorded that this was the single worst day for the 505 in their entire combat history.

Matteson hailed from Wilkes County, Georgia, which is due east of Atlanta and nearly on the North Carolina border. (County seat is Washington).

Matteson is buried at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium
