When I heard about the Moran book I was excited. I thought there would be an new resscource dealing with one of my favorite subjects. When I finally had a chance to take a look at it I was profoundly disapointed.

Not only is the image quality poor, much of it is borrowed from other scources.

A quick look through the equipment section revealed numerous inacuracies and ommisions. As we have established the Aldis lamp and M-227 Signal lantern were not used by pathfinders. Moran states that the Delta lantern was used in Normandy. It was not. The Holophane lamp as shown is not mounted on the standard legs for the 227 as used by the united states but is rather of a variant possibly used by the Brits. One is given the impression that the keeler light was cobbled together (perhaps the concept was) rather than produced in numbers by the Keeler light company as they actually were. Moreover there is at least one postwar radio marker beacon in one image.

Where are the occult beacons?

You see,...the result is misinformation. I am already seeing a lot of stuff on eBay toughted as pathfinder related which is not. Moreover, this misinformation is being regurgitated for public consumption by other living history outfits as gospel. Because they don't know any better.

Its too bad. The history of Airborne pathfinding is a complex and fascinating subject, the technology was, and to a degree still is, in a state fo flux; changeing based on lessons learned and on operational requirements. In my opinion Moran did not do his research.

I do not think a treament of the technology can be adequately rendered without outlining the nature of the operations and these changing requirements.

He could have turned out a damned good book :-(

I could go on and on but what's the point?

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

Sam
