This was the topic of a thread on the Trigger Time General discussion board recently. Here is what was said about him:

John Marvin Steele was from Metropolis, IL where he worked as a Barber. In the service he went by John and in his home town he was known as Marvin.

He was a member of "F" company and at 31 years of age was the oldest man in the company during the Normandy invasion.

As everyone knows Steele was the guy whose chute was snagged by the steeple of the church at Ste Mere Eglise. He was portrayed by Red Buttons in the movie "The Longest Day" the set of which he visited during the filming.

What is not as widely known is that there were two 505ers on that steeple. The other fella, Kenneth Russel, managed to get down. John Steele was captured by the Germans.

Later he was "liberated by other members of the 505th.

John Steele was reported to have been a sort of class clown and had a reputation for causing mischief. He is reported to have gotten into trouble for chargeing officers in the 505th $5.00 for haircuts when he only charged enlisted personel 50 cents.

John Steele died of Cancer in the Early 60's in South Carolina. He was a resident of Hartsville after the war.

Hope this helps.
