Subject: 3/505 Helmet Markings

Captain W. Follmer (C.O. I/505 in Sicily, with HQ/505 in Italy and C.O. G/505 in Normandy) has stated that the black "Cannonball" helmet marking had a forward-pointing white ARROW, so as to send a "message" to their not-so-beloved 3/505 C.O., Lt.-Col. Ed Krause.

The Cannonballs + Arrows were first painted on some 3/505 helmets in Tunisia (possibly already in Morocco???...) in late June or early July 1943, prior to Operation Husky (Sicily), and those helmets were worn thoughout the Italian campaign. Period photos confirm this.

"Cannonballs" with other objects (e.g. Clover) were also seemingly used by the 505.
