Alain Batens has supplied me with the following information on the 82nd at Normany:

Divisional Headquarters----"CHAMPION"

504th PIR----"CIDER"

505th PIR----"CHALLENGE"

507th PIR----"HARDWARE"

----508th PIR----"HARNESS"

325th GIR----"CHESTNUT"

Headquarters Divisional Artillery----"CHANNEL"

319th GFAB----"CHOPSTICK"

320th GFAB----"CHARCOAL"

376th PFAB----"CIRCLE"

456th PFAB----"CHECKER"

82nd Airborne Signal Company----"CHAMPAIGNE"

307th Medical Company----"CHEERFULL"

307th Airborne Engineer Battalion----"CLOVER"

407th Airborne Quartermaster Company----"CLOCKER"

782nd Ordnance Company----"China"

Battalions, where aplicable within a unit callsign, were designated by appending the following to the unit's callsign

ist Bn----"RED"

2nd Bn----"WHITE"

3rd Bn----"BLUE"

Specific individuals were designated as follows:

Commander----"SIX"

EXECUTIVE OFFICER----"FIVE"

Supply Staff Officer----"FOUR"

Operations Staff Officer----"THREE"

Intelligence Staff Officer----"TWO"

Personell Staff Officer----"ONE"

Now,...Say you are working in 3rd Battalion 505th PIR Operations and you wished to contact 2nd Battalion Headquarters. The procedure would sound like this (translation in parentheses):

"CHALLENGE WHITE SIX" (2/505th HQ) "THIS IS CHALLENGE BLUE THREE." (3/505th Operations)"ADVANCE".(please acknowledge receipt of this transmission.)"

It is interesting to note that evvery one of these callsigns starts with a letter "C" except for the 507th and 508th who were attached from an independant brigade in England before Normandy.
