I know for a fact that the 1/16 inf (1st ID) sung them, one was "roll me over," it's still sung today.
When I was at Ft Lewis in 97 for my ROTC camp, one of the cadets I was with (from a Pennsylvania school) had us singing it, and an old timer actually followed us back to our barracks and told me and a buddy of mine that he'd sung that exact same song when he was in from 42 to 45!
He even told us what parts had changed, I wrote it all down, thank god. No way I could write the tune, but I could write the lyrics out easily...
As for Tom's mentioning of "Battleground," who do you think wrote that? The movie was relleased in 48, had that much changed by then?
