In reply to: Anthony Monde, brother 's message, "ROBERT (ROCKY) MONDE, 505th PIR, 82nd Aborne,H-MINUS, PATNTHERS" on 18:29:07 06/07/04 Mon

Robert C. MONDE 32550643 was a member of B Company (1st Battalion) of the 505th. He is noted as DOW which means Died of Wounds. This indicates that he was wounded at some point prior to the listed date of decease and secummed to those wounds on 11JUN44.

Because of the scattered nature of the drops and the confused conditions in the days immediately following D-Day, it would be difficult to determine his precise location when he was wounded. At best one might determine the concentration of drops for B Company aircraft, but it would not be conclusive unless it could be determined where his particular plane dropped its men. Aircraft specific manifests of named troopers were filled out prior to the mission, but none survive in archived form. What few manifests exist were kept as personal items by pilots and the occasional jumpmaster.

Information relative to his death can be found in his FILE 293 which is also called an IDPF (Individual Deceased Personnel File) IDPFs vary as to their content. Some may contain detail information about places and witnesses to events, but that is the exception. I have yet to see an IDPF that specifically states (geographical grid coordinate)where a body was recovered from. It is likely that it will contain copies of inter-unit communication relating to the deceased soldier, disposition of personal belongings, correspondence with the family regarding burial and other paperwork of this type. IDPFs can also contain forensic material relative to the identification of the soldier. IDPFs are not for the faint of heart.
