My good friend Bob

Today my good friend Robert(Bob) M Murphy passed away. Our friendship started back in 1995 when Joe Meyers introduced us to eachother. When Bob sent me the manuscript of his book with the question to check on mistakes, I gave him my first phonecall. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I never expected to find such a friendly and warm personality like he was. I spoke to him on the phone for over 2 hours and we had some good laughs. Because I am living in The Netherlands we talked most over his service during Operation Market-Garden. When he heard that I was moving to Mook, the place where he had some pretty bad days in WWII, he was very enthousiastic. From that moment we start seeing eachother more often and our friendship was growing.

In 2003 I started the Remember September 1944 Foundation. Bob helped me a lot. Not just with information but he also provided me with pictures, copies of records, after-action reports etc. But most important was his support and thankness that kept me going. As an extra support he gave me his paybook and WWII shirt. These items already had a special place in my exhibition but from now on also stands for the lost of one of the greatest person and truly friend I know.

The last few years I was kind of his peronal driver. When he came over to Europe, he called me and asked me to pick him up and drive him around.

June 2008 was the last time. He knew by that time that he had cancer and that he had to fight a battle which was almost impossible to win. But he had the spirit to fight and besides that, still found the time to talk to and see all his friends in Normandy. We stayed in one room at his favorite place in Normandy, La Fiere Manoir, and we had some long talks.

I will cherish all the moments, good times and laughs we had together. It is good to know that he now is with his many friends he lost along the way.

Bob, I love you and I will never forget you.

My thoughts are with his family and all his good friends.

Your good friend Frits.
