Images of overblown snowflakes and bloated stockings wandered aimlessly through the indecisive vaults of her mind. Holiday season had probably been invented to arouse one's inner child -- Nia's puerile alter-ego had been stifled for too many years.

Now the Lilliputian, pewtered mare crept in quietly. She had since discarded her bombastic entrances and submitted to being stripped of her eloquent, somewhat verbose pretense. Cirrus, she thought with a wry, disloyal smile, had yet to relenquish hers.

She wasn't quite sure why she had come back. Maybe because life was incomplete without her closest friends. Maybe because she was utterly infected with Christmas and the lust to love and be loved that married it. The variables were myriad; their combinations too many to number.

Nia's smile did not reach her eyes. Something that had been lost for far too long seemed impossible to regain.
