Subject: Lent - why sacrifice?

Even when I was younger, I never quite understood how fasting/abstinence and depriving yourself of food/meat would bring you closer to God.

I would imagine the value of "sacrifice" if there was a good purpose/benefit to it, like using your time to help/assist the less fortunate (even if you'd rather just relax)... but "sacrificing" for the sake of suffering?

It was a relief reading the ff. from CWG book 1:

"The Spirit renounces what is not real, and nothing in life is real, except your relationship with Me. But renunciation in the classic sense of self-denial is not required. A Master does not “give up” something, but simply sets it aside like something he no longer has use for. There are those who say you must overcome all earthly passions- yet to understand and accept them is enough. What you resist persists. Those who seek so earnestly to overcome all earthly passions often work at it so hard that it might be said, this has become their passion, a passion for God. But passion is passion, and to trade one for the other does not eliminate it. "(CWG1 p100)
