Subject: I thought I was over it - but I am not

Hi all - long time no post!

I thought I was over my BtVS obsession. 'It is finished' I told myself. 'You need to move on'. But for some reason I stuck in the 1st of my S7 DVDs the other day, and it started all over again. It is sad - I know that - but BtVS has been over for 5 years now and nothing since has come close to engaging me in the way that it did. Is there life after BtVS? Has anyone else moved on to something else that they like even better? If so tell me what it is? I need an obsession that can be fed by new material.

Re S7 - this is my favourite season because I am a Spuffy fan, and this came the closest to showing the Buffy and Spike relationship on the screen that I wanted to see. But when it aired I had a number of other problems with it. Having just watched it again I have decided that it is much better than most gave it credit for at the time. I think its problem was that it was sinking under the weight of expectations of so many different factions of fans.

Some examples:
It did a fantastic job of developing Spike's character and the relationship between him and Buffy. JMs acting was superb, and some of his scenes in S7 were incredibly moving. Trouble was a faction of the fans never wanted Buffy and Spike to be together, so didn’t like this storyline.

Kennedy was an OK character. Trouble was that she wasn’t Tara and many fans hadn’t forgiven Joss for killing her so weren’t prepared to give K a chance.

The conflict between Giles and Buffy over who was really in charge was great – a genuine coming of age moment for Buffy. But because the argument was focussed around Spike – and Buffy chose Spike – the anti Spuffy faction didn’t like it.

Wood was a good character with an interesting back story. Amanda was a good character too. Trouble was that every minute of screen time not given to the old favourites ie Willow, Giles and Xander was resented.

Some of the criticisms eg the lameness of all the potentials, the over speechifying of Buffy, and a few plot hints that were not followed through were justified but were IMO no more true of S7 than of most of the other seasons (S5 excepted which was pretty flawless). On the other hand this season contained lots of eps that could hold their heads up with the all time greats of the show – CWDP, Sleeper, Beneath You, Chosen, LMPTM. It had some great peripheral characters - Caleb, Cassie(? from Help), the vampire from CWDP. It had some really funny eps such as the one with the enchanted jacket (what was that called?.

I have been as guilty as anyone of being less than objective about the show – but time and distance really help.

I remember wondering at the time if all these new characters (Wood, Kennedy, etc.) were being thrown out there as future spin-off possibilities.

Just so you know, I voluteer at a high school, and there is a whole new crop of Buffy/Angel fans, from the reruns! I saw a girl with a teddy bear backpack like Cordy's from "Bad Eggs" and asked her about it, and she launched right into a deep discussion about the show. Warmed the cockles of my old heart.

My son is 12, but I think that is still too young. What do you guys think?

These kids are 15 and 16. I think that since Buffy starts in high school, it might not really be appropriate for most middle-schoolers. I do know that I wish I had had something like Buffy when I was in the ninth grade!!
