I think I'd be more drawn to a retelling.

Maybe circa 2017 - 20 years after Buffy. None of the cast need to be there infact seeing as the series bought in completely different characters than the original movie there's no reason a new movie couldn't fall back to the beginning.

Buffy at 16 discovering she's a slayer - rather than a continuation of the series.

I am not convinced I'd enjoy a movie with the TV cast - there's too many people that need serving it'd be almost X-Men like.

You couldn't not have:
Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Dawn, Spike, Angel and Faith but trying to make sense of all of them actually doing something would be hard.
