The mainbrace was generally the thickest and strongest line (rope) on the ship and was the primary support for the main mast. Imagine a hemp rope as thick as a man's thigh. If it broke (split) it wasn't replaced, it was repaired (spliced), tying the two ends of the rope together again strand by strand. You can see it was a very difficult and time consuming operation to splice the mainbrace.

It is also an old nautical phrase for let's have a party.
Because splicing a mainbrace line was such an arduous and difficult task, when it was complete the Captain would generally knock off work for the rest of the day and treat the crew with drinks at his own expense. Now the term "Splice the mainbrace" simply means the boss says, "Leave work, drinks are on me!"
There's an old tail of King George V in the 1930s visiting a British ship that had performed well. He arranged with the captain that during the tour of the ship, he would come across a broken mainbrace. He looked down at it, asked the captain what it was, and the captain told him. The King famously decreed, "Well, splice it!" to which the captain turned to the crew and said, "You heard His Majesty. Splice the mainbrace!" which was met with much rejoicing as it meant the King was throwing a party for the crew.
