Subject: The Spaghetti Western Review of "Empty Places" (repost from Alpha)

Yey!! Oh gods yey!

What? Oh! Nothing about Buffy, I'm excited that an episode of Alias has just finished downloading :) But Buffy was good too....

I loved Empty Places. Really did. Loved Clem, loved Anya, loved everything. Although Wood still bugs the hell outta me, thank god he didn't have much to do this week....

The Good
- Clem! Oh, dear sweet Clem, how we all love you so..... pity you're on your way out of town, I personally would have loved to have had Clem fighting alongside the gang :) Oh well...
- Caleb. Once again, he is my idol. Admittedly, he didn't do as much this week, but he was still cool. Am very curious about his connection to the police.... will this be explored or ignored? As with a lot of these points (in previous episodes), I fear they shall be ignored.
- The Anya/Andrew scene, explaining to the potentials everything they know. Which, its fair to say, isn't a whole lot. Loved the various reactions to it too, especially Faith, Kennedy and Amanda. Thank god they've noticed what we have since Showtime....
- The Willow/Xander scene in the hospital *sniff*. These two are really just phenomenal actors. It wasn't much, but by god it was the most moving moment on this show since Willow's realisation that Cassie wasn't Cassie in CwDP. Coincidentally, that involved AH.....am noticing a theme here....
- Spike and Andrew playing good cop/bad cop. Nice little mirror-image here: in NLM, it was Andrew (and, in some respects, Spike) who was/were beat down and interrogated. Here, they play the cops, not the robbers :) Although the rest of their scenes were good too, especially their discussion on culinary issues :):):)
- The Bronze scene. Nice how they didn't drop the whole "Faith is an escaped convict" thing, and also nice how they tied it into Caleb's role on the show. Plus, it was nice to see these girls cut loose for a little while. And I even found it in my heart to turn my hatred of Kennedy into indifference (she did, after all, try to help Faith. Which is of the good).
- The ending. I can so tell I'm going to have to prepare for a ravaging after writing this. I for one am not unhappy that Buffy got kicked out. I can totally agree with Anya on this. Buffy hasn't been "protecting" them for seven years. They've been fighting with her. They've helped her. You only need to watch Graduation Day, Primeval, The Gift, heck even Grave to realise that Buffy isn't the be-all and end-all of world-savers. Plus, people like Anya, the regular humans (which includes Andrew, Dawn and Xander), have made a choice. A choice that could (and more than likely will) end in their deaths. They don't have superpowers, but that doesn't matter to them. But Buffy, she didn't have a choice. This is her destiny - as evidenced in the opening teaser. She could've walked away, but she didn't, because she can't. And in my eyes, even though she has powers, the fact that she's there because she has to be doesn't make her a leader. It puts her on a level with her friends, because they've chosen to be there despite the lack of power (apart from Willow, Spike and Wood).
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for there being a leader - but why not somebody with experience. Like, oh I don't know, GILES?!?!?!?

The Bad
- Not much bad tonight. Only that I didn't like what happened with Dawn at the end. All Judas-y. And no, the constant religious imagery being used this year has not been lost on me - its just that this feels wrong. It doesn't feel like a Dawn-thing to do. At the end of the day, she and Buffy are sisters. And they will do anything for each other. We've seen it before - Buffy died so that Dawn wouldn't have to. But this, on top of LMPTM, makes me wonder if they're being written like they are on purpose - as if ME are trying to say that the sisterly-bond we've seen before doesn't exist anymore. Which we'll never believe. I suppose it's ME's way of harking back to the "She won't choose you" line from CwDP, with Dawn taking pre-emptive action before Buffy gets the opportunity to not choose her. But it just doesn't feel right.
- Buffy and Giles. Yeh, I'm glad they didn't just forget about their altercation in LMPTM. But I don't like Buffy being angry at Giles, or any kind of negative emotion. Of all the character relationships in the show, this has constantly been shown as the strongest - right up there with Willow/Xander. It seemed like nothing could break it - and, somehow, Spike has. Well, not Spike himself, but the thought of Spike. He's in Buffy's mind, her thoughts, seemingly all the time. And as much as I like Spike, I don't like what his relationship to Buffy is doing between her and Giles.

The Ugly
- No ugly this week :) Be proud, ME, there has been too much ugly previously....

Well, thats it folks. Jump on in and flame me or bash me, whatever. I don't mind, I'm here ready to defend my POV. With weapons, if necessary :) But not for long, I have Alias on my computer and I'm literally dying to watch it.....damn their cliffhanger endings!!!
