There are now very many versions of Christianity. The FIRST version, the one by Jesus, helped many deserving people; the emphasis was on the quality of members, never mind their quantity.
..... After Jesus had been crucified by the Romans the priorities were changed to maximize the quantity of members (read: their money donations and tithes), never mind their quality. New versions were invented, mythology stories were added and made into "history", also bits and pieces of other religions were absorbed, such as Mithraism.
..... The authoritarian structure was inherited, being based on the idea that God was the boss and king of "The Kingdom of God", with the leadership representing God. But that was when Christianity was an artificial family, with God being the Father, and the members since baptism having been born-again and sinless "children".
