DAWN OF FAITH: S2E14: UNDER YOUR SPELL

“Okay, this whole – no more demons thing has really proved to be somewhat a big amount of crap” Lindsey says as she backs Tara behind her

“W-what is it?”

“You know, I’ve not really had time to care” the two of them throw themselves behind the sofa as a tiny, dwarf sized demon, with twelve foot long tentacles, whips around the living room.

“What do we do?” Tara asks shaken

“Err…”

Minute’s later Faith is stood with the demon on the end of a spear

“Ladies, you should really invest in a weapons case”

They look at eachother before innocently smiling at Faith like two children who know they’re in trouble.

Over at the dorms

“Morning baby” smiles Ryan as he kisses Dawn on the head

“Morning” she smiles as she turns to the clock “or not, it’s like P.M” she jumps out of bed in a panic.

“It’s a Sunday”

“Sunday, right…” she realises his smile and returns it “Sunday” she nods happily before crawling back into bed wearing his over sized football shirt.

Ryan wraps his arm around her, sliding his fingers into hers.

“You need to clean your nails” she says comfortably

“Demon blood”

“Surprising amount considering”

“I think it fit’s the whole toilet theory” she starts “we blocked it so there’s a bit of a spillage”

“Nice analogy”

“I could do worse”

“So, what’s with the early bird panic syndrome?”

“Sorry” she sits up “sophomore year starts in a week and I just know it’s going to be mad crazy”

“Mad crazy? Like how?”

“The usual target for weirdness crap – also, not Thalia or Andrew”

“Andrew dropped out?”

“More like off” she pulls the cover round her legs “as in the face of the earth”

“Garrison too” he adds with concern

“Maybe they eloped” Dawn giggles with hope

“Yeah, maybe we’ll lead normal lives one day”

“Things are that bed between them?”

“Consider yourself lucky you weren’t there”

Later on in the day

“So, you got any plans for today?” Dawn asks as she strolls the streets with Connor

“Thalia is off doing the ‘family’ thing, I guess I should go check out the kids from that fight”

“Right…”

“What?”

“Thalia…first person you mentioned”

“So? She’s my friend”

“Just your friend?” Dawn teases

“My Best friend”
“Really?” Dawn seems disappointed

“Yeah, I’m not into her”

“Oh”

“I’m into someone else”

“Oh?”

“You”

“Oh” Dawn stops “Bold”

“I got a hair cut, it’s not that short”

“Bold not…how can you just come out with that?”

“What?”

“That you like me?”

“Why should I lie?”

“Connor I have a boyfriend”

“So, I didn’t make a pass at you I just told you the truth”

“Argh…you’re….and…argh” Dawn storms off confused

“So are you” he calls after her as he continues on like all is as before.

Darkness falls across Boston, shadows creep across the streets as the buildings, all unoccupied, are highlighted only by the full moon and faded street lamps.

The cemetery is empty of living or undead, the streets are bare of people … except for two young women.

Faith runs up the side of the wall before leaping in as she kicks a large, sharp skinned demon to the floor with a thump.

“Man, you’re really beginning to piss” kick “me” punch “off” kick

“Where’d the other one go?” asks Thalia completely out of breath as she leans forward, hands on knees, long bottle red hair falling infront of her chest.

“Beats me, but this things are getting tougher”

“You’d noticed”

“Just a bit”

“Where are they coming from? They’re like so much stronger than regular demons”

“Regular demons?” mocks Faith “They happen a lot”

“You get my drift, it’s not right – they’re like…”

“From another dimension?”

“That’s a better explanation than mine” Thalia flicks her hair behind her and grabs the large, blood stained axe from the back of one of the demons.

“Big dumb animal” she spits as she kicks it, only for it to reach it’s long, thin, red claw around her ankle and flip her, head first onto the road.

“Don’t you stay dead” Faith yells as the fight roars up, Thalia still out cold in the centre of the street as a truck comes speeding along.

“Yo’ T get up!” Faith calls in a panic as she struggles with the demon

The lights of the truck blind over Thalia, as the horn blows repeatedly. The truck, stops just before colliding with her.

“Ever heard of your breaks?” asks Ryan as he stands infront of the truck stopping it continuing forward.

Faith whips a spear directly through the centre of the demons head and lops it upwards, detaching it.

“You okay?” Ryan asks as Thalia comes round

“I’ll live” she smiles as Dawn approaches.

“What are you guys doing here? Dawn, I thought you were patrolling with Connor?”

“No, I decided to pair with Ryan”

“So you left Connor alone to patrol?” snaps Thalia “the kid can look out for himself but, damn, have you seen these things here lately?”

Thalia dusts herself off and hurls the axe for Faith to catch.

“Checking off?” ask Faith as she storms off into the night

“Checking up” she calls without turning back

“Dude, if girl doesn’t get laid soon, she’s gonna totally Buffy on my ass” Faith laughs before catching Dawns less than impressed glance.

“Y’know what – I think I’m done here for tonight, gotta get my sleep – early researcher catches the demon and all that” Faith stretches in a blatantly stages yawn before heading off and leaving the two lovers alone.

“So, what’s the deal with Connor? You not talking to him?” Ryan says to break the awkward silence, as the wind is the only sound blowing between them and flipping Dawns hair around.

“Temperature change hey” she smiles

“Thalia’s in a bad mood” Ryan finishes before moving back on topic as Dawns eyes glaze over, creeping away from him “Connor? The deal…what is it?”

“No deal” Dawn folds her arms tightly, pacing at speed down the road as Ryan remains standing, confused.

After just a few eternity long seconds, he begins to run in catch up.

Crossing infront of her and holding her by both arms, he stops her and looks flat into her eyes. She looks away.

“Did he…did he do something to you?”

“No. He didn’t do anything?”

“Well, did he say something?”

“No, he just…it’s nothing” she throws herself to the side and starts to walk away

“Dawn!” he calls after her

“Just leave it Ryan!” which is exactly what she does and he won’t as she heads off down the street alone, leaving him angry and confused.

Small fragments of marble and stone lay scattered around the grass as a demon head is thrown hard against the floor repeatedly.

Connor is in the cemetery kicking it something chronic.

He has his bloodied, rough hands, clamped to the demons horns as he knocks him back and forth. The sound it cries is like a fox being strangled, barely bearable.

“Mate, just kill it” Thalia drones as she sits opposite with her legs crossed, filing her nails under the light of the moon.

“Done” he says proudly as he flips to his feet and dusts himself off.

“So come on, what did you say to Dawn?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Haha, yeah right, I lived with the girl and you’re my tightest mate, You think I can’t read you both like big ol’ bright letters on a billboard?”

Connor sits besides her, looking to the ground. He pouts like an eight year old that’s not aloud candy until they’ve eaten their greens

“I said I liked her”

“Hold up! You crazy or something? You don’t tell her that kinda stuff”

“Why not? It’s the truth, why would I lie?”

“Because it’s the right thing to do, Dawn’s happy Connor, she doesn’t need the added…you in the mix”

“But…”

“Not but” she becomes serious “Connor, Ryan would kill you”

“I’d like to see him try”

“Today must be your lucky day” the two spin to the voice to see a less than thrilled Ryan standing behind them, fists clenched.

“Oh crap!” Thalia says to herself as her eyes flick frantically to and throw between the opposing parts.

Ryan slowly paces at Connor as if he’s been pulled inside a bad, old age, western.

“Keep” shove “the hell” shove “away” Ryan attempts to get another push in but is taken short as Connor smashes his fist into his face and leaves him bloody on the floor.

“No” Connor smiles.

He runs at Ryan as if he’s a bull and Ryan’s the red flag, naturally, before he reaches him, he’s thrown over the top by Ryan’s mind.

Immediately after returning to his feet Connor is on top of Ryan smacking him in the face every chance he can get closer enough without being mentally pushed back.

Ryan’s rage gets the best of him as he moves Connor’s weapon bag open and lifts a dagger into the air.

“Oh, come on!” Thalia drops her arms to her sides rolling her eyes “Don’t make me do the big hair thing”

Clearly this woman has no choice, the boys are torn apart as she climbs onto a tomb, snapping her lime green stiletto heel in the process.

As the wind howls between them, both men are pushed against the sides of trees until the woman in charge decides they’re calm enough to be let down…at least that was the plan.

However, the wind comes to a calm as Thalia is thrown down by the demon that got away.

He simply roars in her direction before sprinting into the darkness.

“That did not just happen” she groans as both Ryan and Connor lift her to her feet “This shirt – this 100% pure white, prada shirt – it cost me $320 – I’m gon’ get him and I’m gon’ kill him”

“Why are you wearing such expensive clothes patrolling?”

“If I’m found dead – I gotta look good”

“But still...” continues Ryan

“Not the time” she stabs a look

“You two, get over it, Dawn Summers – she ain’t all that – Connor deal with it, go have a wank in your room and release your sexual frustration – Ryan, adopt a personality and stop just being nice to Dawn in private”

Gathering her pride in a tantrum she begins to work off, bobbing up and down where her heel has detached.

“Thalia!” Connor calls her back

“Nah ah! Both of y’all stay the hell away from me until you can pay for a new shirt”

END OF ACT ONE

“Wow, busy” Tara sighs as she sips on a thick pink milkshake, looking around at the hundreds of people frantically rushing around the mall as if it’s the last shopping day ever in the history of existence.

“I know – it’s like, you only live once…” she pauses at a glance from Tara “…or as many times as you can be bought back, why spend your life shopping?”

Tara smiles up at Maria as she slurps up the last bit of her milkshake.

“Ahh, I could easily have another” she smiles “I remember milkshake is good”
“This is your first milkshake since you’ve been alive…this time?” Maria replies in shock

“Well, we’ve always been busy with the crime and the magic and stuff” she sighs deeply
“I remember when Dawn and I used to do the big movie and milkshake funday – part of the divorce settlement” she laughs, clearly reminiscing bad times.

“You guys okay?” asks Maria concerned

“We’re fine, definitely, it’s just we’ve not had much alone time this lifetime – it’s cool I mean we’ve both got our own things, a-and she’s nineteen, It’s selfish to expect her to drop everything for some twenty five year old”

“You’re twenty five?”

“In October”

“Wow, you don’t look it”

“Hey, I was dead – I think I have an excuse”

“No, You don’t look old enough – hey, maybe you’re still like…twenty two…technically”

“Really? That’s – okay, that’s weird” the two girls laugh at eachother before falling into silence.

“So…” starts Maria “You’ve finished your shake – I can’t guarantee fun – ‘Sabrina is the only thing showing, but I can guarantee movie” she smiles wishfully.

“Movies good – and hey, reviews don’t put ‘Sabrina’ down too badly”

“Oh please!”

As they walks off laughing they manage to get as far as around six metres before spinning back in reaction to a large shattering sound.

“Maria?”

“I think we’re at the same place Tara”

the two girls immediately rush over in concern as a young girl around the age of twelve, boots her ten year old brother in the face after hurling him through the shop window.

He reaches his hand out and grabs a large sheer of glass ready to thrust at her neck.

“Separate!” Tara calls waving her hands, causing the two of them to fall apart.

“What’s going on?” asks Maria as she tends to the wounded boy

“I have no idea – this seem familiar enough for you?” asks Tara in reference to the fight witnessed by their friends the previous week.

“Hey!” calls a mans voice “What have you done to my children? Witches – witches! Stay away” he yells as he snatches them from the two.

“I – I didn’t …we” Tara is on the spot completely stuck on what to say

“With all due respect sir, your son would’ve stabbed your daughter if she hadn’t stepped in, so back the hell off or I’ll get the lady over there to call a third ambulance got it?”

“You don’t scare me witch!!” he grins with a sinister look in his eye

“I’m not a witch sir, I’m a gypsy – as in gypsy curse” she steps closer and plucks one of the hairs from his head.

“See this? Bit of rhyming a fire and I could burn you from the inside – so back the hell away and see to your children”

She then smiles sarcastically and links arms with Tara

“Have a nice day!”

As the two of them walk off arm in arm, Tara looks back, her eyes totally locked with the mans.

“We shouldn’t – w-we can’t leave them”

“They’ll be fine”

“B-but how…I mean…”

“I cursed them”

“Curse?”

“Good curse, they’ll heal – let’s go”

On the other side of the mall, Thalia, who is practically drowning in bags, shops alone.

“Now this is the way to live” she smiles to herself as she sits on the far side of the food court, near enough ignoring the paramedics on the otherside.

“What’ll it be?” asks the waiter, a middle aged man with dark brown, thinning hair.

“Err…double mocha…no…what the hell, full fat milkshake, whipped cream, chocolate flake, sauce and sprinkles…oh and do you have sparklers?”

“One mama jam flabby coming up!” he jokes “Won’t this pile on the pounds for your fighting?”

“My what?” she’s suddenly alert until he nods to a pair of kick boxing gloves in her bag.

“Oh, I do that so that I can drink slash eat this” she smiles

As he disappears to the main counter, Thalia’s eyes wonder the mall where the majority of chaos has now calmed.

“Hello?” she says to herself as she spots a familiar looking shadow creeping around by the fire exit before shifting outwards.

“Here’s your drink miss!” distracted she pulls out $20 dollars and leaves it on the table.

“Keep the change!” she leaves all of her bags, and her cell phone as she runs over to the exit leavin the man grinning “kids” he laughs as he gathers her things up.

She continues to rush through the small corridor, keeping at a safe pace from the figure before skidding at the corner being face to face with the exact same demon she’d narrowly missed earlier.

Over on the east court of the mall, Faith is merrily wondering around with a dagger up one sleeve and a stake up the other.

“Why did I bring a stake – it’s day” she says to herself as she fishes her cell phone from her left pocket.

“Sup?” she asks thinking she’s talking to Thalia.

“Hey, um…someone left their cell in the food court – you’re number was the last dialled…”

“Right, is it…are you still there?”

“Yeah, she also…”

“See you in five” she hangs up before fast stepping across the mall.

As she reaches the court, both Maria and Tara have returned after receiving calls from Thalia’s cell.

“Sorry” says the waiter “I didn’t think you’d all show…also…there’s her things” he indicates the bags as the girls look at eachother in desperation.

“She left shopping?” asks Tara “This is the red headed girl right?”

“It’s her stuff, but it’s not her” frowns Faith to herself “You two, take her stuff home – waiter man, where’d she go?”

“Out the fire exit is there anything I can –“ before he can finish, Faith is through the doors.

“ – Do to help”

END OF PART TWO

“Okay – you’re kinda big” Thalia nods “so – I’m gonna go back in there and get some weapons so that I can beat down”

She stops speaking as another two appear, literally, from nowhere

“ – The three of you” she rolls her eyes.

Inside, Faith is still in the corridor, the door is completely jammed and not budging at all no matter how many times she rams into it or kicks it.

“Damn it!” she pulls her hands through her hair in frustration

“That’s naughty” comes a small voice, causing Faith to jump

“That’s nice kid – go find your parents” she says off the shoulder as she continues to pull at the door.

“That’s not nice. You have no manners”

“Look short stack, I don’t –“ she turns to face the girl but stops wide eyed as the girl is now backed up by nearly forty children, wall to wall, grinning

“Man, this child play crap never goes good”

“No swearing!” the child snaps fiercely as the crowd begins to pour at her like a wave of goblins in a rage.

Outside, Thalia is giving her best in the battle against the demons.

She runs up the side of the wall before flipping behind one of them which has vanished before she lands.

“what the f-“ he grabs her from behind, squeezing her tightly as the other two head toward her.

Playing dead the two demons prepare to tear her apart until she flips her head up into the holders face and snaps both legs out toward the other two.

“It’s been a bad day – don’t piss me off!” she smiles before another appears infront of her.

“God! You and that blink appearing thing? Really pissing me off!”

She steps back, stretching both arms to her side as wind begins to wrap around through her hair. Her eyes glaze over as the clouds thicken.

Over in the car park as Maria & Tara load bags, they stop immediately as the rain begins to pour to their left, but not to their right.

“Thalia!” calls Tara to Maria as they run off towards the height of the storm.

Meanwhile, inside the mall the children are ambushing Faith.

“Ow! You bit me!” she looks down at her hand “You little asshole!”

The first girl, which appeared, climbs onto a bin and leaps at Faith with the stake that fell from her sleeve.

It stabs into her arm causing Faith to rage up completely. She throws the girl over into the other children, practically bowling them over.

In an instance they calm and begin to cry

“You’re not…you’re real?” she says shocked at herself she leans in to talk to one of them whilst gripping her bloody arm.

The boy grins at her before stabbing his finger into her wound and twisting it.

As Faith screams the room she sees begins to spin at a great speed before stopping. No children are there and the door is now able to open.

“T?” she calls, only to find herself back in the food court with both Tara & Maria

“Can I help you ladies?” asks the waiter concerned

“Did someone leave a cell here?”

“Not today” he says clearly wigged by their expressions as he walks away.

“Faith – have you…did you…”

“Do a whole time trippy thing? I’m right there” she nods at Tara

“That door did Thalia –“

“It’s like the village of the damn, damned in there…avoid scary kids at all costs”

“Is that what happened to your arm?” asks Maria as she rubs a drop of Faiths blood into a star shape on her palm

“What are you doing?”

Maria clamps her hand against Faiths arm, whilst holding her clean hand on Taras forehead. Closing her eyes she mumbles to herself – Faith’s wound remains open but loses pain and the blood flow stops.

“How’d you do that?” ask the girls in unison and shock

“I’m a gypsy – I got my ways” she winks

“You got any tricks that’ll find T?”

“Only walking”

Back in the staff parking, cornered into an alley entrance – Thalia is seriously battered.

“You’re not gonna win” she says as she attempts to stand from the floor, spitting blood from her mouth.

“Where did you come from?”

They completely ignore her, as they seem to react to an unheard sound, they walk off in a trance like state.

Thalia takes a moment to gather herself before following, hands holding ribs as she limps along the road.

Faith and the others arrive on the scene to find nothing at all – Faiths instinct immediately takes her to the orphanage where the two had bonded just months before. What else could possibly explain the strange events involving children.

She sprints to the graveyard only to find that it’s been replaced.

“What’s going on?” asks Faith to one of the builders

“The graves? The Mayor had them transferred to a crematorium – he said that, since they got no family – nobody will visit them”

“So, what’s this?”

“No clue, some kind of public house or something”

Meanwhile…

Thalia follows round the side of a building but they keep going, she can barely stand. Within twenty minutes of walking, for her, a lot less for them – who are barely in sight, Thalia reaches the field in which the slayers had recently been killed.

There she sees it – a swirling portal, crackling blue lights around it – the demons enter as if going through a security check, she can see into the other world as the portal opens to let them in.

The sky is red, the ground black – three moons – beasts sprawling around the place – she knows this place, a place told in a thousand stories by Connor – the demons were from Quo’Tarth

END OF PART THREE

“Let me in!” Dawn stands in the doorway with her brow arched “No, I lived her first I don’t need an invite” she replies for him as she pushes past.

“What?” he bitches

“Don’t bitch! You beat my boyfriend! You tell me you like me then you beat my boyfriend”

“Love”

“What?”

“Love you”

“Nah ah you said like and tonight I’m taking first answers only – first answers are just as complicated as Dawn Summers can handle without a serious explosion of the head!”

she stops pacing and takes a deep breath as she sits beside Connor.

“Connor – I like you, I really do, you’re a great guy”

“but – “

“But you’re too late. I’m with Ryan now and I’m happy with him”

“You sure about that?”

“Connor” they look into each others eyes “Don’t”

“Don’t? Don’t you come here to where I live and start telling me what I can do”

“Oh..My.God!” she squeals as she holds her head “Look at you! Look at us! This is ridiculous”

“I’m ridiculous?”

“THIS! This is ridiculous!”

“You’re right…” he steps over the coffee table in two large steps and holds Dawn by both sides of her face as he kisses her. She resists at first before she begins to kiss back.

They immediately pull apart as Faith & Thalia come through the door. Despite the fact that Thalia is barely standing and Faith is holding her up, she immediately reads them – their looks are so guilty they may as well be a bold news heading.

“Connor! You fall out with anyone back home?” asks Faith as she rests Thalia down

“L.A?”

“Quo’Tarth”

“Not too many people to fall out with” he replies confused to her question

“Faith? What’s going on?” Dawn asks meaning Thalia

“Ladies & Gentlemen, buckle your belts – cause we’re going home baby”

“Home?”

“She means Quo’Tarth!” Connor informs Dawn as he looks at Faith questioning her like she’s insane, as she stands there, juiced, smiling, and almost buzzing.
