Author: First aired Thursday 3rd July 2003
Subject: Episode 8.20 - "SHATTER" by Kashmanik (Part II)

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR 1997 – DAY

(Willow and Dawn are standing at opposite ends of a long corridor, facing each other. After a moment
of disorientation, they begin walking to each other, and meet at the foot of a staircase.)

WILLOW: Dawn, what’s… what’s happening?

DAWN: We’re connected Willow.

WILLOW: Um… ok, what?!

DAWN: I got the spell from one of your books. Remember, when Buffy was all comatose-y and you went into her?

WILLOW: This is my head?

DAWN: Ya-huh. So what’s the deal with being in Ye Olde High School?

(They begin walking down a corridor, cautiously.)

WILLOW: Not sure… I mean, I liked High School, but I tend to associate it with giant snakes and Vampire armies nowadays, y’know? Besides, in Buffy’s head she took me somewhere she felt safe, but… I don’t feel scared.

(Dawn spots something ahead of them, and stops walking, finally realizing what’s going on.)

DAWN: That’s cos we’re not in your imagination…

(The camera pans around and we see Amy standing in front of a glass cabinet, gazing at a certain
familiar cheerleading trophy.)

CRYPT – EARLY MORNING

(Buffy, Giles, Spike and Clem are gathered around Dawn, all extremely worried.)

BUFFY: Dawn?! Dawn?! Giles, what the hell’s going on?

GILES: I don’t know! Dawn seems to be… tethered to Amy. It’s likely a spell of some sort…

BUFFY: A spell?! Remind me again why I let her start doing that?

GILES: Because you knew she wouldn’t listen to you if you tried to stop her.

BUFFY: Well, there’s that.

(Spike leans in close to Dawn, and takes a deep breath through his nose.)

CLEM: Ew, Spike, time and a place buddy…

SPIKE: Not that, you dolt. I’m checking if she’s OK.

(He stands and turns to Buffy.)

SPIKE: Lil Bit’s fine. Breathing’s nice ‘n steady, pulse is fine, but…

BUFFY: That was an ominous “but”.

SPIKE: (sighs) Without trying to encourage another round of “Spike’s a crazy vamp”, there’re three smells coming from her. Or three scents, rather.

(Buffy pauses, looks dubious, then turns to Giles.)

BUFFY: Spike’s a crazy vamp.

SPIKE: Point I’m making love, is that Dawn isn’t the only one in there.

(They all look down at Amy, still laid flat out on the crypt.)

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR 1997 – DAY

(Dawn and Willow are still watching Amy – they haven’t been spotted, and are talking quietly.)

DAWN: Why would she want to bring us here? I thought she was Dysfunction Girl, not really the High School type?

WILLOW: It’s not the school she’s here for. You see that trophy?

DAWN: Yeah.

WILLOW: That’s kinda Amy’s Mom.

DAWN: Huh. They must have skipped that part of Sex Ed.

(Willow glares at Dawn in a jokey way.)

WILLOW: It happened way back, just after I met Buffy. There was this whole witchcraft thing, which kinda freaked me out at the time, but hey. Irony. Anyway, Amy and Catherine, that was her Mom, had this whole hatred thing going on. It was totally –

(Before Willow can finish, a massive wall of fire starts rushing down the corridor towards them,
burning everything in it’s path, and enveloping Dawn and Willow. As they scream, we cut to -)

MAGIC BOX (MAIN ROOM) – DAY

(Anya is standing with the phone, aggressively thumping in a number, and chattering to herself.)

ANYA: Why, why, why do they buy cellphones and NEVER turn them on? It’s stupid. It’s shortsighted. It’s a waste of beautiful crinkly money.

(She gives up, slamming the phone back onto it’s receiver. She starts pacing, looking unsure of what to
do. We see her look up onto the Upper Level, at the green string of mist rising up from the ceiling. She
disappears into the Training Room, grabbing some of Amy’s books and a battleaxe, and heads out the
door.)

SUNNYDALE HIGH STREET – DAY

(Anya exits the Magic Box and gazes at the string of Key energy that is gently winding down the road
and round the corner. All down the street cars have stopped, people have left their shops, and are
standing in the street. A few people wave their hands through the string, all looking amazed. Anya
looks angry.)

ANYA: No! Get back! That’s a little girls guts you’re playing with, you sick freaks!

(The people in the street turn to look at this crazy shouting woman, and ignore her, going back to their
gawping. Anya clearly doesn’t appreciate this. She narrows her eyes, and raises the axe high over her
head. She lets out a roaring battle cry, and charges towards the crowd.)

ANYA: WHY DOES NO ONE LISTEN TO ME?!

(The crowd quickly disperse, once the see that crazy shouting lady is actually crazy axe lady. Anya
stands, smoothing out her hair, a satisfied grin on her face.)

ANYA: Ah, that’s better.

(The camera moves now so that it is low to the ground. We’re now following a woman’s legs walking
down the street slowly, gracefully. We move back to a closeup of Anya’s face, as her jaw drops in
horror.)

ANYA: No…

PROSERPEXA: Oh, yes…

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR 1997 – DAY

(We once again see the wall of flame engulf Dawn and Willow, their screams ring out, and suddenly
their environment has changed to - )

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR 2001 – NIGHT

(Dawn and Willow are now standing amidst the black, charred rubble of the first Sunnydale High
School, clearly a while after the Graduation Day explosion. Amy is nowhere to be seen. As Dawn and
Willow’s screams stop, they look at each other, and realise they’re not injured.)

DAWN: (shakily) Did your knees stop working too?

(Willow puts a comforting arm around Dawn, and they begin walking.)

DAWN: Amy vanished. Before the great balls of fire hit.

WILLOW: I think she’s scared… she might not know what’s happening.

AMY: (VO) I know what’s happening.

WILLOW: Huh?

AMY: (VO) I know what’s happening….

(Amy rounds the corner, looking extremely jittery. She’s stumbling from side to side, and sobbing.)

WILLOW: Amy?

AMY: (VO) Watch.

DAWN: That’s some nifty ventriloquism.

(As the onscreen Amy approaches [we’ll call her Dream Amy] we can see that her eyes are entirely black, and weeping
thick, black tears.)

DREAM AMY: Takes away everything… all I had… damn nutjob….

DAWN: What’s she talking about?

(A deep sense of sadness covers Willow’s face, as she replies -)

WILLOW: Me.

(On Dawn’s reaction, we cut to -)

SUNNYDALE MAIN STREET – DAY

(Anya is slowly backing away from Proserpexa, who is in her human form. A thin smile appears on the
demon woman’s face as she approaches…)

PROSERPEXA: A beautiful morning, isn’t it?

(Anya stays silent, clutching the axe even tighter.)

PROSERPEXA: Anya, it’s not polite to ignore your elders.

ANYA: Is it polite to spend a night hurling someone across the street? I forget.

PROSERPEXA: You’re still angry with me? That’s a shame. I’d hoped you would have grown from the experience. I know I did.

(Proserpexa is getting closer and closer to Anya, backing her towards a wall, as Anya accidentally
drops her axe.)

PROSERPEXA: It was invigorating to feel pure fear again. I’d forgotten how powerful, yet utterly simplistic it is. How primal it is. But you’d know about that, wouldn’t you, Anyanka. You’ve seen fear; bathed in it. Drunk your fill of it.

ANYA: A long, long time ago. Well, apart from that little glitch last year, but….

(Anya walks backwards into a trash can, sending it clattering to the ground. She jumps and yelps in
shock, and realises that her back is now pressed against the wall. Trapped.)

MAN: Are you OK Miss?

(We can see a man standing behind Proserpexa, looking concerned about these two women arguing.
Anya tries to respond, but only manages a gulp. She is paralyzed with fear now.)

MAN: Miss? Do you need some help?

(Proserpexa only now turns to face the man.)

PROSERPEXA: She doesn’t. You do.

(Proserpexa grasps the man by the neck, and lifts him in the air. Spinning around, she hurls him with
incredible force at the wall next to Anya. We cut to Anya’s face before we see the impact, but the
crunching noise tells us all we need to know. Anya is on the verge of breaking down now…)

PROSERPEXA: Fear. It’s miraculous.

CRYPT – DAY

(The group are still gathered around – Clem is standing at the door, breathing in the fresh air. Spike is
in the back of the crypt, staying away from the sunlight. Buffy is seated next to Dawn, stroking her
hair. She looks to Giles for support.)

GILES: (gently smiling) All we can do is wait. Dawn is becoming very talented, I’m sure she’s fine.

(Buffy nods, and goes back to watching Dawn.)

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR – NIGHT

(We’re back in the shared mind of Dawn, Willow and Amy. Dawn and Willow are now following
“Dream Amy” down the corridor, watching as she stumbles and shudders.)

DAWN: We’re seeing her past, aren’t we? Her memories?

WILLOW: I think so.

DAWN: So, when is this? Why would Amy come here?

WILLOW: She’s… in withdrawal. She’s looking for something to drain magic from.

DAWN: Withdrawal? Oh….

WILLOW: After I killed Rack.

(Dream Amy collapses to the ground, and begins scrabbling through the rubble, desperately
searching… until she finds something. She lifts it from the ground, and brushes the dust aside. It’s the
cheerleading trophy. Dream Amy presses it to her forehead, and lets out a small laugh of relief. She
then clutches it in both hands, and small, puny purple crackles of magic leap from the trophy into her.
And nothing else.)

DREAM AMY: No. Nonononononononono… that can’t be everything.

(She desperately tries once more to drain the trophy, and fails. She throws the trophy down the
corridor, and we hear it clatter repeatedly, until it comes to rest.)

DREAM AMY: (sobbing) Please… please…

(Dream Amy rises once more, and sets off jogging down the corridor. Dawn and Willow pursue her.)

SUNNYDALE MAIN STREET – DAY

(Anya and Proserpexa are still facing one another.)

PROSERPEXA: You’re confused, aren’t you? You don’t realise why I must destroy you.

ANYA: No.

(Proserpexa sighs, and moves closer to Anya, only a few feet away now.)

PROSERPEXA: (sigh) I expected more. When I knew you were here… in this den of hateful people. I had hoped you were still serving vengeance. But then I learned you were human, and in the service of the Slayers, no less.

(This accusation gives Anya just enough courage to answer back.)

ANYA: I do NOT serve them.

PROSERPEXA: Regardless, my view of you changed then. You were no longer a potential ally. Your knowledge made you a threat.

(The demon woman grabs Anya by the throat, and lifts her to the air.)

PROSERPEXA: A threat I must eradicate now.

ANYA: (sobbing) Knowledge? I don’t know anything… I promise.

(We see a hand reach down to the ground for the axe that Anya dropped….)

PROSERPEXA: Empty words. I tire of them.

(The axe is swung down by an unseen person, connecting with Proserpexa’s outreached arm at the
elbow, chopping the demon’s limb in two. Proserpexa’s head spins round to face her attacker, and her
human form drops as she screams in agony. The snakes on her head unfurl, reaching out to their full
length, hissing, spitting and biting.)

XANDER: And I tire of you.

(Proserpexa looks down in horror at her severed arm, then back at Xander.)

PROSERPEXA: I offered you my love!

XANDER: Love hurts.

(He swings the axe once more, but Proserpexa grasps his swinging arm with her one hand. Realising
she has no other hand to strike with she leans towards him, letting the snakes on her head do the work
instead. 4 snakes sink their fangs into Xander’s shoulders, causing him to sink to the ground in pain,
dropping the axe.)

PROSERPEXA: You ungrateful little boy.

ANYA: (OS) Would you please just –

(Anya steps into frame, bearing the axe, and swings it – hard – at Proserpexa… taking her head clean
off her shoulders.)

ANYA: - shut up!

SUNNYDALE HIGH CORRIDOR – NIGHT

(“Dream Amy” is still jogging down the corridor, struggling to keep her balance, and is followed by
Dawn and Willow. They reach a part of the school much more badly damaged than the rest, but a
charred sign on the floor still has a few letters discernable. L***A*Y.)

SUNNYDALE HIGH RUINS (LIBRARY) – NIGHT

(Dream Amy staggers into the center of the ruined room, and collapses to the ground. She is
completely still. Dawn and Willow approach warily.)

DAWN: What’s –

AMY: (VO) Watch. Listen.

(Barely audible, we begin to hear a hissing noise. As Dream Amy starts to sit up, listening to the sound,
she seems to look stronger, more powerful. The hissing grows louder and louder, building to a
crescendo, before Dream Amy flees the Library ruins, and we fade to white….)

(We fade back in on….)

AMY’S HOUSE (PORCH) – NIGHT

(Dawn and Willow materealise in the porch of Amy’s house, and after a moment of disorientation, they
can hear movement upstairs. They share a glance, then head up the stairs.)

AMY’S HOUSE (UPSTAIRS CORRIDOR) – NIGHT

(As Dawn and Willow reach the top of the stairs, we can hear a manic giggling. But this isn’t happy
giggling – it’s disturbing, unstable. Dangerous.)

DREAM AMY: (OS) Thank you, thank you, thank you. I need it. Gotta have it. Thank you.

(Dream Amy walks out of a door into the corridor, and we can see that her forearms are slick with
blood. Dawn and Willow react with a blend of curiosity and disgust. Dream Amy enters another room,
and returns… bearing a bucket full of blood. Dawn and Willow follow her into the -)

AMY’S HOUSE (BATHROOM) – NIGHT

(Dream Amy pours about half of the bucket of blood into the bathtub, which is all that’s in the room
now. The tub is now full of deep, red blood. Dream Amy looks very satisfied with this, a wide, strange
smile on her face. She sinks her hands into what is left in the bucket, and walks to the wall. She
finger-paints a series of runes and symbols on the bare, stripped walls..)

WILLOW: Oh goddess….

DAWN: What is it?

WILLOW: I’ve just remembered. I know this ritual. When… when I drained Giles, and I wanted to end… everything, this was something I considered. But it was too slow, I wanted results. Fast. I cheated.

DAWN: So this is how Proserpexa spoke to Amy?

WILLOW: Yeah… that’s what was in the Library too.

DAWN: Of course! She rose out of the Hellmouth.

(Dream Amy has now finished her artwork on the walls, and begins to strip. Once naked, she sinks
down into the tub of blood, descending beneath the surface. A huge ring of flame erupts around the
bathtub, and we can hear a voice booming out in the room.)

PROSERPEXA: I love you.

(Suddenly, we cut to a rapid montage from “Mirror” of Amy and Raven – researching, venturing into
the Temple, being attacked. And one long, slow motion shot of the Watch tumbling to the ground in
“Thicker Than Water”.)

(CUT TO - )

SUNNYDALE MAIN STREET – DAY

(We’re back at the same instant that Proserpexa has been beheaded. Anya’s tear-streaked face shows
shock, but we don’t know why, until we pan down. To Proserpexa’s one-armed, headless body…
standing up.)

XANDER: You have got to be kidding me…

(Xander and Anya watch the injured demon regain her footing. After a moment of rotating in the
middle of the street, Proserpexa breaks into a sprint, away from Anya and Xander. Clearly having no
head doesn’t effect her eyesight. Anya watches her leave, then helps Xander to his feet. They share a
moment of looking into each others eyes, and an awkward pause follows. Eventually – )

ANYA: You’re hurt. Come on.

(They walk back down the street towards the Magic Box, leaning on each other for support. From
round the corner come Faith and Andrew, who run to catch up.)

FAITH: Woah, you guys OK?

ANDREW: And what’s with the freaky… green… string thing?

ANYA: Long story.

(The four of them enter the Magic Box, but the camera pans back to the severed head and arm of
Proserpexa. They morph together, and transform into a snake which slithers away down the street.)

A WHITE VOID – DAY/NIGHT

(Dawn and Willow are still standing, whilst Amy kneels on the floor, facing away from them.. Nothing
seems to be happening any more. Willow eventually speaks….)

WILLOW: Amy?

AMY: (VO) Yes.

WILLOW: We understand now. That’s what you wanted, wasn’t it? To explain.

AMY: (VO) Yes.

DAWN: So we can all wake up now, right?

AMY: (VO) No.

WILLOW: Amy… I know you’re scared, but we’re here. You got lost, I understand that now. I’ve been there…. Let’s go.

AMY: (VO) One last thing…

(As Dawn and Willow turn to each other, rolling their eyes, we fade to -)

HILLSIDE – DAY

(Dawn and Willow fade back in on a dusty hillside. There is nothing around them as far as the eye can
see, except for a small group of tents, a handful of stone buildings, and a few horses far away, at the
bottom of the hill. That is, until Willow and Dawn turn around, and see the gargantuan Temple behind
them. Proserpexa’s Temple, in all it’s glory. Amy appears from nowhere, and walks up to them, her
head bowed. In shame.)

WILLOW: What is this?

AMY: A story. Look.

(The trio gaze down the hillside as they see hundreds of people emerging from the tents and buildings,
who begin walking up the hillside. There are families, elderly people… a wide array of humans.
They’re singing, laughing, generally all looking very happy.)

DAWN: Who are they?

AMY: The Cult of Proserpexa.

WILLOW: They’re the Cult?

(The massive crowd is suddenly a lot closer now, and Willow, Dawn and Amy move aside to let them
pass. They watch as the people kneel in front of the Temple, wide eyed and smiling. The effigy of
Proserpexa on the front of the Temple begins to emit a wispy vapour, which floats to the ground and
takes form. Proserpexa. The crowd break out in a cacophony of praise, all proclaiming their love and
admiration for the demon.)

AMY: This would happen daily. Proserpexa’s power is based in belief. The more people who follow her, the greater her power.

DAWN: So what happened to the Cult?

AMY: This.

(Without warning, the earth begins to tremble. The quake becomes stronger as the people begin
panicking. The small children begin to wail, and Proserpexa watches, looking worried. Suddenly, the
ground beneath the people subsides, and dozens of them are pulled beneath the dust and sand. Dawn
averts her eyes from the sight, as screams fill the air.)

MAGIC BOX (MAIN ROOM) – DAY

(Xander, Andrew and Faith are seated at the table when Anya enters, carrying bandages and
disinfectant.)

XANDER: Ahn, say that again. That thing out there is Dawn?

ANYA: Yes. Reckless fool. Could have destroyed the universe, but nooooo, she “felt” it was right. She’s trying to communicate with Amy and Willow, or something.

XANDER: She just swooped into the hospital and mojo’d Will. Kennedy stayed, I left to see what was happening.

ANYA: Shirt.

XANDER: Wha-?

ANYA: Take off your shirt, you need bandaging.

(Andrew’s eyes light up, but he stays silent as Xander removes his shirt. Anya stands in front of him,
cleaning the bite wounds on his shoulder. Faith catches Xander’s eye and flirtily raises her eyebrows,
with a cheeky grin. Xander simply smiles and rolls his eyes. Anya notices this, “accidentally” puts too
much disinfectant on a bite mark.)

XANDER: Ow!

(Anya simply ignores Xander.)

ANDREW: So, what’s the sitch? Anyone heard from Buffy lately?

XANDER: She left the hospital earlier to find Amy. We should call her.

ANYA: I tried. No signal. I haven’t heard from Giles or Spike either. They’re probably having sex.

FAITH: What is your issue with sex?! Every time that poor vamp’s alone you think he’s making with the horizontal dance. Or vertical. Cut him a break.

(A stony silence falls on the room. Andrew eventually stands.)

ANDREW: Tea?

HILLSIDE – DAY

(We cut back to the dream world as the dust from the earthquake is settling. Dawn and Willow realise, in horror, that all of Proserpexa’s Followers have been buried by the quake. The Temple has also been pulled down into the ground, and only the top spire (that we saw Willow raise in “Grave”) pokes above the surface.)

DAWN: Oh my god…

WILLOW: They were all killed? No, they couldn’t have been. Proserpexa needs believers to survive, right?

AMY: One survived… a little girl. She’d only have been 10 years old, but she crawled out from under the dust.

(We see an arm slowly protrude from the dust, and sure enough, a small girl heaves herself out. She is
covered in soil and sand, coughing and spluttering, and her arms and face are badly grazed. Willow and
Dawn stare at this girl, in pity.)

AMY: She was all alone. Everyone from the camp was dead. She spent days up here, trying to dig through the earth… but it was no use. She went back to the camp, and lived there alone for weeks. Until the food began to run out.

WILLOW: Oh…

MAGIC BOX (MAIN ROOM) – DAY

(Faith, Xander, Andrew and Anya are tooling up with weapons when the phone rings.)

ANDREW: Mine!

(He races to the phone, stumbling as he runs.)

ANYA: (about Andrew) Loser.

FAITH: (quietly) Bitch.

(Xander hears this and glares at Faith. Luckily, Anya doesn’t hear.)

ANDREW: This is the Magic Box, your one – Oh, hi Mr. Giles.

GRAVEYARD – DAY

(Giles is pacing back and forth in front of the Crypt speaking on Buffy’s cellphone, and inspecting the
line of energy streaming through the Graveyard.)

GILES: Hello? Can you hear me?

(He lowers the phone from his ear, pulls a face at it.)

GILES: Bloody thing.

(He lifts it back to his ear.)

GILES: Andrew? Who’s there with you?

ANDREW: (OS) Um, Anya, Xander, and one half of the Unstoppable Research Masters of Sunnydale.

MAGIC BOX (MAIN ROOM) – DAY

(We see Anya, Xander and Faith’s reactions to the name. Faith simply winces, Anya has a look of
smug superiority, and Xander grins.)

GILES: (OS) I’m going to ignore that and carry on. OK?

ANDREW: Okeydokey.

GILES: (OS) We’re holding Amy at Spike’s old crypt. Do you know where that is?

ANDREW: Sure, we used to have a camera there, when I was a supervillain.

GILES: (OS) Oh, of course. We need you to bring the Sarishti Manual from the shop, I’m trying to discern exactly what spell Dawn is using… I’m getting a little worried that she may be trapped in there.

ANDREW: We’ll be there ASAP. Seeya!

GILES: (OS) Bye.

(Andrew places the phone onto it’s receiver, and turns triumphantly to the group.)

ANDREW: We have a mission!

(On Faith’s dubious raised eyebrows, we cut to -)

CULT ENCAMPMENT – NIGHT

(Amy now has Dawn and Willow standing amidst the tents and hastily constructed buildings of the
Cult Town. We can see the Girl wandering, lethargically, from building to building, weeping.)

AMY: It wasn’t long before she began to starve. She had no idea how to take care of herself. She used to cry out at night in desperation, for help. One day, her pleas were answered.

(We see a figure carrying a lantern slowly walking into town. We cut to the Girl’s point of view, as she
looks up at a woman in elegant period dress. Her face is obscured by the lantern light, but she gently
says -)

WOMAN: Hello. Are you ok, sweetie?

(The Woman lowers the lantern, and Dawn and Willow’s jaws drop.)

WILLOW: Halfrek?!

(And we close in on the woman’s face, seeing that yes, it is Halfrek.)

HALFREK What happened to you? Where are your mother and father?

(We cut back to Amy, Dawn and Willow whilst Halfrek and the Girl converse quietly in the
background.)

AMY: You’ve heard of Halfrek?

DAWN: Heard of her? We know her… knew, I should say.

AMY: The little girl’s sorrow was so overpowering, Halfrek felt it from thousands of miles away. She came here, to give the child vengeance.

WILLOW: Vengeance against who?

AMY: The world.

DAWN: That’s a whole heap of vengeance.

(We move back to Halfrek now. She is kneeling, and holding the girl in her arms. It is clear that some
time has passed.)

HALFREK Do you know the best thing to do, when things seem bleak, sweetheart?

GIRL: What?

HALFREK: Make a wish.

DAWN: Ohh, this never ends well….

GIRL: I wish I could see all the people who went away, whenever I want.

(Halfrek’s face erupts in a mass if veins, as she rasps -)

HALFREK: Wish granted.

(The Girl and Halfrek vanish, as do Amy, Dawn and Willow. The three witches reappear back at the
Temple spire, next to Halfrek and the Girl, deep in conversation. Next to them stands the Mirror of
Mipax.)

AMY: Halfrek forged a Mirror. An artifact that could mould and reshape time, if one had the power or strong enough will to do so. The Vengeance Demon also gave the girl a Watch, to keep her safe from the effects of using the Mirror.

(Halfrek stands, walks away from the girl, and with a flourish of her arms, teleports away.)

AMY: And then she left.

(The Girl begins to cry again, clearly not wishing to be alone. She starts dragging the Mirror up to a
large, stained glass window that is still exposed above ground. The glass is already shattered out from
the force of the earthquake, and the Girl peers through.)

AMY: She decided that if she couldn’t be with her family, she would go back to another who loved her. Proserpexa.

(The Girl leaves the window arch and goes back to the Mirror. Gritting her teeth, she pulls the Mirror
up to the arch, and pushes it through, falling in after it.)

DAWN: No!

(She leaps forward, but is too late.)

AMY: Obviously, the fall killed her. But the Mirror was too strong. It survived the impact, and has been there ever since.

(Willow is clearly now getting a little impatient…)

WILLOW: Um, Amy? It’s great that we know what we’re dealing with now, so… hadn’t we better go, y’know, deal with it?

DAWN: I think it’s time we woke up now. No one’s going to harm you, I promise…

HOSPITAL ROOM – DAY

(Kennedy is pacing back and forth, worried, impatient, anxious. She keeps looking back at Willow,
panicking.)

KENNEDY: Right. That’s it. Screw this.

(Kennedy picks up Willow, and carries her out of the room.)

HOSPITAL CORRIDOR – DAY

(A nurse sees Kennedy leaving with Willow, and walks after her.)

NURSE: Where are you taking that woman? You can’t just leave.

KENNEDY: So stop me.

(Kennedy, without even turning back, marches out the main door of the hospital with Willow.)

SUNNYDALE HOSPITAL EXTERIOR – DAY

(Kennedy steps out into the daylight, and looks down at the stream of energy leading from Willow’s
mouth down the road. She sets off following the trail.)

GRAVEYARD – DAY

(Anya, Faith, Xander and Andrew are crossing the graveyard, bearing weapons and a large book. They
approach the crypt, and duck inside.)

CRYPT – DAY

(The gang all greet each other, and gather round Dawn and Amy. Before much can be said, Kennedy
enters as well, with Willow.)

KENNEDY: OK, what the hell’s going on?! Creepy-ass green stuff is flowing from my girlfriends mouth, and…

(She notices the energy is flowing to Amy and Dawn also.)

KENNEDY: …into… those two… Ew.

GILES: We’re still trying to discern the spell Dawn used.

(Anya slowly raises a hand, and sighs..)

ANYA: I know what’s happening…

(Buffy walks to Anya, and in relief says -)

BUFFY: Oh, thank god. Tell me.

ANYA: It’s a long story, and…

(As one, Amy, Dawn and Willow’s eyes open, and they begin coughing and spluttering.)

ANYA: …really one Dawn should tell you.

(As the gang gather around the waking trio, we cut to -)

PROSERPEXA’S TEMPLE – DAY

(We start off in a close up on the Mirror of Mipax, as it pulsates and glows. We pan back to see the
mutilated Proserpexa swaying in front of it, like a viper ready to strike. The snakes that morphed from
her disembodied head and arm enter the Temple, and slither towards her. She collapses to the ground as
they approach, allowing the snakes to crawl down into her torso through her open neck wound. We see
her skin literally crawling as the snakes work their way around her body, and slowly, a new arm and
head sprout, taking shape. Proserpexa gradually rises and smiles, but then… a look of concern. Deep
concern.)

PROSERPEXA: That took too long. Far too long.

(She is pacing back and forth very nervously now, and shimmers from being solid to transparent.)

PROSERPEXA: No… no…

(She raises her hands to her chest, covering her heart. And as her face crumbles in shock and disbelief,
she mutters -)

PROSERPEXA: She doesn’t believe any more…

GRAVEYARD – DAY

(All except Dawn and Buffy are lingering around the graveyard outside the crypt, in silence. All we can
hear is the faint, muffled sound of loud arguing.)

CRYPT – DAY

(Buffy is practically nose to nose with Dawn, their faces red with anger.)

BUFFY: I do not believe you!

DAWN: I knew what I was doing!

BUFFY: No. No, you didn’t! You did something… phenomenally idiotic!

DAWN: It wasn’t idiotic. It came to me… I just KNEW what to do. How it worked.

BUFFY: How?! How could you possibly know?! You’ve been studying witchcraft less than a year!

DAWN: This wasn’t just witchcraft. I mean, yeah, the spell was… but the power behind it….

(Dawn moves away from Buffy, and her demeanor changes. She’s less confrontational now, and
more scared.)

DAWN: …the power behind it was in me. It’s the Key.

(Buffy simply shakes her head.)

BUFFY: No. That isn’t you anymore. That hasn’t been you for a long time.

DAWN: Ugh! Just because you say so, doesn’t make it so! For too long we’ve just pretended I’m a regular girl… but for the last few days, I’ve known I’m not that. I just know.

BUFFY: It wasn’t about pretending Dawn… I just never spoke about the Key because I didn’t think you wanted to know. I thought… I thought you could live normally. I mean, as normal as possible in this town…

DAWN: For a while now I’ve been thinking about me. About what I’m made of. Gregor told us the Key couldn’t be used for good… that it was a tool of evil. But I realised, the Key’s never been human. It’s never thought, or learned, or lived for itself. So maybe the Key CAN be good. Maybe I can use the power inside me for good.

(Buffy doesn’t respond.)

DAWN: If I have that power, I should use it. If I can help people, and save lives, then I have to use it. And I want you to accept that. And help me through this. Because I need my sister…

(Buffy is still silent, but walks up and hugs Dawn. As they embrace, they quietly say….)

BUFFY: I still think you’re stupid.

DAWN: Yeah… well you smell of crypt.

BUFFY: Heh. Used to be able to cover that with the smell of Doublemeat Burgers, but…

(Dawn pulls away from the hug, and raises her eyebrows, smirking at Buffy.)

BUFFY: …but you really don’t need to know that.

DAWN: Come on. We’ve gotta move fast… Amy told us everything.

(They exit the crypt, and we cut to -)

GRAVEYARD – DAY

(The gang are all gathered, and Willow is standing by Amy, speaking quietly with her. Kennedy is
glaring at Amy.)

BUFFY: Hey guys…

FAITH: You girls kiss and make up?

DAWN: We’re cool.

AMY: Won’t be for long.

(The gang turn to face Amy, who has a look of stony determination.)

AMY: I didn’t realise how long I was out. It’s about 3 in the afternoon, right?

(Giles checks his watch.)

GILES: Uh, yes. 3:05.

AMY: Oh.

SPIKE: Oh?

AMY: We’ve got two hours before everything starts.

ANDREW: Only two hours? Oh god…

SPIKE: Thanks for the advance warning!

AMY: Hey, I tried to tell you guys hours ago, but hello?! Magic whammy on me.

KENNEDY: Yeah, and if you hadn’t gotten involved in the first place this wouldn’t be happening… the whole world wouldn’t be on the brink of apocalypse, for the 5th time in 24 hours.

(Amy shakes her head in disgust and starts to walk away, but her path is blocked by Xander.)

XANDER: Amy… don’t go. We need you if we’re going to stop her.

WILLOW: He’s right. What you know of Proserpexa could be vital…

AMY: Fine.

WILLOW: (to Buffy) We need to gear up, pronto. You know I’m not normally a big lover of the old physical violence, but we’re running out of time.

(Buffy surveys the group, and begins walking. They follow her and march out of the graveyard.)

CLEM: Uh… you guys don’t expect me to come, right? Right?

(Clem seizes the opportunity to run off in the opposite direction.)

PROSERPEXA’S TEMPLE (MIRROR ROOM) – DAY

(Proserpexa is little more than a vague outline of a human figure now, frantically running back and
forth in the chamber. She seems to be preparing some kind of ritual – a large, ornate symbol is daubed
on the floor, covered in bones.)

PROSERPEXA: I won’t go back. Not now. Not because of one misguided child.

CUT TO A MONTAGE OF SCENES –

*The gang arriving at the Magic Box, and gathering weapons.

*Amy watching as the group prepare, looking extremely apprehensive.

*The now ghost-like Proserpexa hovering above the symbol in her Temple.

*Faith and Anya both reaching for the same sword, and glaring at each other when they realise it.

*Dawn and Giles talking, while Dawn gesticulates wildly about the spell.

*The gang leaving the Magic Box and walking down the Main Street
