Subject: Episode 8.14 - "MINIME PERCURSUM ITER" by anyas_butt_monkey (Part III)

(Back at the Hellmouth, Giles, Spike and Faith are exploring the caverns, looking for more carnage. Kennedy, freaked by her earlier encounter, is standing in the High School Basement, shining her flashlight down.)

KENNEDY: *shouting* Anything?

FAITH: Nothing but more deadness.

GILES: It's a massacre.

SPIKE: But without the flames, which is a shame really.

(Faith gives Spike an odd look.)

SPIKE: What? Flames add ambience!!

FAITH: Whatever. *rushing to get out* Look, I don't think we're going to find anything else down here other than corpses. Why don't we –

GILES: Shhh! Did you hear that?

FAITH: Hear what?

GILES: Like....laughter. Faint laughter.

KENNEDY: *shouting* What are you guys talking about?

(Giles looks up at her, scowling. Faith, meanwhile, is doing all she can to forget her earlier encounter.)

FAITH: *covering* Giles thinks there might be something down here. Something that laughs. *pause* Do you think its Hyena People? B told me about those...

SPIKE: Hyenas?

FAITH: Yeah, sure, B said that a bunch of wicked rowdy students were
possessed....or something.

(Giles shoots a look at the both of them.)

GILES: Not really the time to discuss Sunnydale history.

FAITH: Sorry, Jeeves.


(While they are talking, something comes towards them from the darkness. Looks a lot like a Fyarl demon, the one Giles turned into courtesy of Ethan. As it gets closer, they remain oblivious to it's presence. As they continue to search, Kennedy shines her light in the demon's direction, and she sees it.)

KENNEDY: Giles! Faith! Behind you!

(Faith whips around, stake at the ready. The demon lurches toward her, but instead of attacking her, it falls to its knees in front of her. Faith looks down, as Giles and Spike come up to her. Kennedy jumps down into The Hellmouth, curious as to what is going on.)

SPIKE: What's it doing?

GILES: I don't know.

(The demon looks up at the gang.)

DEMON: Help.......us........

With that, the demon falls completely flat on its face. To reveal a great big smoking hole in his back, revealing the inner, icky contents of its body. Its legs have also been slashed up.

KENNEDY: Oh my God.

FAITH: *looking at the body curiously* What would do something like that?

VOICE: I would.

(Giles and Faith shine their flashlights in the direction of the voice. They see a woman, walking towards them out of the shadows. As she gets nearer, they see her hair is writhing, moving. Her skin is scaly, and bears more than a passing resemblance to Medusa.)

FAITH: What is up with her hair?

GILES: I believe they're snakes.

(Before they can do anything, the woman fires 2 bolts of magic at the group. Midway through the air, they turn into giant snakes, which attack Spike and Kennedy. As the snakes wrap themselves around those two, Faith rushes to save Kennedy but is bitten on the arm by one of the snakes, and thrown onto the ground. Giles, meanwhile, tries to get closer to the woman.)

(Suddenly, the ground starts to shake. Both the woman and Giles stop in their tracks.)

WOMAN: This isn't meant to happen. This is all wrong.

(She glances at Giles.)

WOMAN: You did this. You and those riders.

(She looks up at the opening, and starts to glide up. The intensity of the quakes has increased, Giles can barely stand, while the others have all fallen to the ground.)


FAITH: Giles, what's going on?!?!

GILES: I don't know!!

(The woman reaches the High School Basement. She takes one last look down, then leaves. Faith gets up, shakily, clutching her arm, and whacks the snake wrapping itself around Spike repeatedly with a stone. Giles searches through his pocket, looking for some of the magicks he picked up from The Horsemen's ritual site earlier. He finds what he's looking for, and throws it at the snakes wrapped around Spike and Kennedy.)

GILES: Descade!

(The snakes fall off Spike and Kennedy, but the blast from the magic knocks them both to the ground. The snakes slither off into the shadows. Giles and Faith try to get to the fallen Spike and Faith, but the shaking is so bad that they have to hold on to each other just to keep standing. A dull red light starts to fill the room.)

FAITH: We need to get out of here, Giles!

SPIKE: You have a plan, right?

GILES: Not really, no.

(They look up at the low lights of the basement, which start to get redder and redder in hue.)

*CUT TO: THE SUMMERS HOUSE*

(Willow is sitting in the kitchen, as Dawn and Xander do the washing up, inbetween flicking the soapy water at each other. A strange look comes over her face, and her eyes turn black.)

WILLOW: They're in trouble.

(Xander stops long enough to turn to Willow.)

XANDER: Who's in what now?

WILLOW: I have to help them.

(Willow raises her hands in front of her, and beams of yellowy magick flow between her fingers. Her body starts to shake. Xander and Dawn look on, slightly frightened by what's going on.)

DAWN: Willow, stop!

WILLOW: I can't, not yet.

*CUT TO: THE HELLMOUTH*

(As the gang look on, suddenly the quakes stop. The Hellmouth is calm again.)

KENNEDY: What...?

SPIKE: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, luv.


(With that, Spike jumps up and clambers up the rocks, followed by Faith, Kennedy and Giles.)

(As Giles climbs out of the Hellmouth, is starts shaking again. Worse than before, the vibrations can be felt all around the High School. The red hue starts to get brighter and more blood-red. Spike and Faith turn around to the Hellmouth, they see the ground around them literally breaking apart. As Kennedy and Giles join them, the Hellmouth starts to collapse in on itself.)

SPIKE: What the bleedin’ hell is going on here?

(Suddenly, a huge wall of bright, blood-red light shines up from The Hellmouth. Giles looks on, a sudden realisation hitting him.)

GILES: We have to run. Now.

KENNEDY: Why? What's going to –

GILES: Just run.

(The foursome turn towards the exit, and start running. We switch into slow-mo, as the red-light begins to stretch out from the original fissure, with the gang outrunning it - for now.)

ANYA: (VO) For whatever reason, I think this had to happen. All of it - Jack, D'Hoffryn, my doubts - it only made me surer. More knowledgeable. That the path I had chosen was the right one. It gave me the opportunity to move on, from Vengeance, for good. It made me a better person.

(During this voice-over, the gang have been running through the basement, in slow-mo. The wall of blood-red light has been catching up with them, and just as they reach the main corridors of Sunnydale High, the light is shining through most of the school.)

ANYA: (VO - Cont...) And while that may have its problems in the future, for now it's all about the battle. The Hellmouth. The reason we're all here - demons, Slayers, witches - and us. The reason I'm where I am today.

(The foursome reach the open ground, and run a bit further until they hit the outskirts of the school ground.)

(The red light has filled up the school, it shines out of all the windows. The earthquakes still haven't stopped, the school looks like it's going to topple over.)

(But before it does, the red light expands, shines brighter until its white, forcing the gang to look away - until a huge explosion is heard. Opening their eyes, the gang don't see any light anymore - but fire. The school is in flames, chunks of the building scattered around. They stare in shock, until Faith breaks the silence.)

FAITH: What happened? Jeeves? You got an answer in that brain of yours?

GILES: Well, there was this theory....in The Codex.... but it can't be, not now...

FAITH: Couldn't be what? This isn't the time to play 20 Questions.

GILES: The ritual, that the Horsemen performed to open up The Hellmouth – by using themselves as power sources...they must have somehow, overpowered it...

KENNEDY: You mean they opened it too much?

GILES: Essentially, yes. It opened up wider than ever - and consequently destroyed itself. It swallowed itself.

SPIKE: How?

GILES: Hellmouth's only exist in a certain amount of space in our dimension. By expanding beyond the space given, it...doubles back on itself, effectively.

FAITH: So The Hellmouth ate itself.

GILES: And now it's no more. No more Hellmouth.

(The gang take a minute to digest this.)

FAITH: Sounds strange, doesn't it?

KENNEDY: But isn't this a good thing? No more demons?

FAITH: All except our mystery guest... Who was she, anyway?

SPIKE: Whatever she was, she certainly has power.

(The gang get up, and start to walk away from the burning High School.)

GILES: From the looks of things, I'd say she's a very powerful demon....

KENNEDY: *Really* powerful.

GILES: ...possibly even a Hell Goddess, judging from the display we saw back there.

KENNEDY: Well this can't be good. Shouldn't we do something?

GILES: There's nothing we can do at the moment, she's too strong. Let's just go back, inform the others of what's happened.

(Giles takes one last look at the burning High School. His face suddenly turns gloomier, as he finally "connects the dots".)

GILES: Of course. *under his breath* Willow.

*Fade to black. End of Episode*
