Mirror Images

March 2001

In the distance, she can see the tall buildings of Llanview come into view, and almost immediately, her hands tighten around the black leather steering wheel. Her heart starts to be a little faster, already sensing his...presence. She takes a deep breath, willing herself to calm down, but it's of little use at this point, knowing what lies ahead.

Téa's mind rewinds the events of the last six hours. Funny how her life seemed to always change at the drop of a hat, and it always involved him. But he was like that, a literal 'tornado', whirling into her life, sending it into massive upheaval, changing it forever with his mere presence. The difference was, even when he wasn't with her physically, the 'tornado' was still there, just maybe lesser in it's strength, it's power. The analogy brought a small smile to her lips, as she remembered someone commenting on her 'storming' into other people's lives, her take no prisoners attitude it's own force of nature.

And what do you get when two storms collide? One big, gigantic, explosive storm....

Their relationship had been stormy, to say the least...but Téa didn't find that necessarily bad, albeit exhausting. The last storm had been a ...brutal one. Had sent her for cover, needing to recover her own strength, her own power. But the remnants were still there, would always be there, in her heart.

The look on her Abuela's face when she had walked into her apartment earlier that day had immediately made Tea's antenna go up. Something was up...that she could tell. Her Abuela had smiled her best 'calming' smile, sensing the turmoil, the storm, in her granddaughter....

"Mija..."

"Abuela..what is it? Just tell me, I know something is wrong, I can tell...are you okay?"

"Si...I'm fine. I...I got a phone call, just a little while ago."

"Is it Del? José?"

"Mija...let me finish," Abuela had said, gently squeezing her granddaughter's hand. Téa nodded, her brown eyes filled with anxiety. "It was ...someone looking for you."

"Well who would be....," she pauses, her eyes widening with understanding. "Todd?"

Her grandmother hesitantly nods. "Si. He didn't seem to know you were here, he just wanted to know if I knew where you were...I didn't tell him. But, he sounded..."

"What? He sounded what...did he sound hurt?" she asked quickly, her natural instinct to worry about him surfacing.

"All he said was that he was in trouble...and that he needed you, and that I should tell you that if I heard from you."

"I need you," she mumbles, staring at the buildings growing larger as she gets closer to Llanview. "And I come running...."

She smacks her hand against the steering wheel, a little ticked off at her lack of ability to resist him, especially when he was in need. Which, with Todd Manning, seemed to be often. It was inexplicable to her...her need to protect, even in the face of all that had happened between them. Maybe it was her need to take care of a fellow abandoned child, maybe she was just happy to have someone need her. Whatever it was, it made her drop everything and head to Llanview without a second thought.

Her grandmother had hugged her goodbye, worry in her wise brown eyes. But there was something else...a hint of understanding. For she had once loved a difficult man too...and through their trials and tribulations, she had doubted herself and their love, only to finally win out in the end. She knew as soon as she had hung up the phone..that Tea would go to him. She could see how much love there was in her granddaughter for Todd, and although she was afraid Téa would end up heartbroken again, she knew it was a chance that Téa would take.

Her heart starts to pound harder as she enters the city limits of Llanview. Swallowing hard, she remembers the last time she saw the town line...except she was heading the other way. She could still feel Todd's hand covering hers between them in the front seat of his car, as if to reassure himself she was there...and to reassure her she'd made the right decision. Could still hear the storm behind them, as they drove out of Llanview into their future. A predictor of things to come? Or just...par for the course with them? She wasn't exactly sure where it had gone so wrong for them....but she didn't have time to contemplate right now. She wasn't getting sucked back in...she wasn't. She would help him with whatever trouble he was in, but that was it. She had to be strong, she had to resist him, because she knew that if things didn't work out between them again...she surely wouldn't survive.

She pulls into a small parking lot and reaches into her purse for her cellphone. Todd had been very vague, only saying he was in trouble, not where she could find him. She had debated who she should call, but had finally settled on Viki. At least Viki wouldn't tell her she was crazy for even going near Todd again. Flipping her phone open, she dials the number for Llanfair. After a few rings, she hears a familiar voice.

"Hello?"

"Viki?"

"Yes?"

"Um, it's Téa...Téa Delgado."

The silence that greets her makes Téa feel a little uneasy, wondering if she made a mistake. Who knew what Todd told Viki about what happened between them.

"Viki?"

"Yes...I'm sorry, I'm just rather surprised. You might be the last person I expected to hear from. How are you?"

"Fine, I'm fine. Listen, I need to ask you something."

"I'm assuming it has to do with Todd."

"Yes, well he called me, well actually my grandmother, this morning, asking her to pass on a message to me, that he's in trouble. That's all he said, and I'm wondering if you could maybe help me out, at least tell me where I could find him."

"He's in jail, Téa."

She lets out a long breath. "I guess I should have known. Why?"

"For shooting Max Holden, and I believe they've reopened the investigation into RJ's shooting as well."

"Wow....okay. But why isn't Sam defending him?"

"Téa, a lot has happened since Todd came back to Llanview."

"Why am I not surprised? Look I should probably get to the PD but I really would like to talk to you, about everything, if that's alright?"

"Of course, give me a call when you can."

"Thanks, Viki," she says, hanging up the phone. She tosses it onto the passenger seat, and restarts her car. As she drives down the familiar streets, Viki's words ring in her ears. She wonders what could have possibly happened between Sam and Todd that would cause Sam to completely abandon him when Todd needs him most.

She pulls into the parking lot of the police department and turns off her car. As she stares at the building in front of her, a wave of anxiety passes through her. She checks her hair in the rearview mirror, and gets out of the car. She smoothes the skirt of her black suit before wrapping her long black wool coat tightly around her. As she heads towards the door of the PD, she notices dark gray clouds in the distance.

Storm's brewin...

To be continued..
