Previously...Finally, she nods to the guard, who unlocks the gate to allow her into the cell area. The click of the lock snaps Todd out of his thoughts, and he quickly jumps up, turning towards the sound. His eyes widen as he sees her standing on the other side of the bars.

"Tea," he says softly.

*****

His eyes never moved from her, afraid if they did, she would vanish into thin air. He watched her take a slow step towards him.

She allows herself the momentary luxury of losing herself in his beautiful hazel eyes, before clearing her throat to speak.

"You seem surprised, but you called me."

Shaking his head slightly, he rubs his hands over his face. "Yeah...I just didn't expect to see you ...so soon, if at all. Your grandmother's a pretty shady character, she didn't even let on that she knew where you were."

"Well she wouldn't, until she talked to me."

"You must not have been to far away to get here so fast."

"I was in New York."

"New York, huh? So that's where you went after you blew me off."

She bristles slightly...although she had expected his attitude. "You know, you called me...you need MY help...do you really want to fight with me right now? I'd say you have far more important things to worry about." She nods to the guard, motioning for him to open Todd's cell. As the door opens, Todd steps back slightly, the nerves that always plague him when she's around coming to the forefront. She just caused so many...feelings in him, feelings that he couldn't handle. Ironic...since she'd left, he'd been numb, trying anything, doing anything to feel. Now, with her standing in front of him, he was feeling everything...intensely...and he prayed for numbness. The effect she had on him terrified him because he was still unsure he could trust himself with her...if he could protect them both.

They stare at each other a moment, both aware of all the things that need to be said between them...both knowing that there were lingering feelings of pain between them.

BOOM!

The loud clap of thunder causes Téa to jump slightly. She crosses her arms in front of herself, hoping the barrier would hold in the flood of emotions that were threatening to pour out. Just seeing him, just being near him, it was ...too much. That's the way it always was with them, though...everything magnified to the nth degree. Everything between them was felt so intensely that neither was sure they could survive each onrush of emotion, but neither were they sure they could live without it.

"So," Téa sighs, "did you shoot Max?"

"No."

"Who did?"

"Blair did."

"And she set you up?"

"Yeah, with the lounge lizard's help. You know, she's really ungrateful."

"How do you figure that?"

"I covered up her tracks for months, and what do I get for all my trouble? A ticket to Statesville for a crime I didn't even commit."

"Well, you did commit one of them."

"Yeah, but they can't prove that."

"Oh, and that makes it alright Todd? Don't you ever wonder WHY you end up in situations like this?"

"You know Téa, I don't have the time to deal with my 'inner psyche' right now. Either you're going to help me or you're not."

Téa momentarily massages her temples, then sighs. "Fine. Why did Blair shoot Max?"

"Cuz he's a scumbag?"

"Could you be more specific?"

"He was screwing Skye Chandler on the side."

Téa gasps, a small chuckle escaping. "You're kidding me?"

"Nope. Blair was a little ticked, and..well not exactly in her 'right mind'."

"I didn't know Blair had a 'right mind'," Téa comments dryly.

Todd laughs. "Good one Delgado."

Téa freezes as she hears him call her his nickname for her.

BOOM!

The thunder silences both momentarily, both feeling a maelstrom of emotions inside of them. Finally, after a moment, Téa speaks.

"I guess I'm a little confused about something."

"What?"

"Why you called me."

"I sorta needed an attorney."

"Why isn't Sam representing you?"

Todd looks down. "Sam isn't exactly on my team these days."

"So, why me? I mean, there are other lawyers in Llanview."

"I figure you owe me."

Téa looks at him incredulously. "Excuse me?"

"Well Téa, this is all your fault."

"My fault? Oh, I can't wait to hear this...how exactly is this MY fault?"

"If you hadn't left, I would never have come back to this godforsaken town!"

"Oh grow up Todd! Don't you think it's about time you stopped blaming EVERYONE else for your mistakes?"

"MY mistakes? Oh, like you didn't make any?"

"No, I did, of course I did! But the reasons you ended up here are all you, pal. I didn't tell you to come back here. I didn't tell you to get mixed up with Blair, and I sure as hell didn't tell you to marry her!"

Todd's eyes widen in shock. "You knew about that?"

Despite her efforts to control her emotions, tears fill her eyes. "Wasn't that your intention Todd? That big press conference, all the front page coverage in the papers? You wanted me to know and you made damn sure that no matter where I was...that I would see it."

He sits down slowly on the cot. It sometimes frightened him, how well she knew him. And she was right, he had made a big deal out of it to throw it in her face, to hurt her, because he was angry at her. Angry that she left, angry that it still hurt worse than just about anything, angry that he still needed her, still loved her.

Téa rubs her arms, blinking back the tears in her eyes. "I knew...as soon as I turned the channel and saw it...I knew."

"What did you know?" he asks softly, watching her closely.

"That that was my punishment....for leaving you."

To Be continued..
