Shakespeare uses diction in this sonnet to convey the season of fall by describing the way the leaves hang at that particuliar time of year, and describing how the sweet birds of spring no longer sing their song of joy and happiness, but of the bitter sound of death of the good spring weather. The time and season are significiant because death is a dark thing that occurs at a dark time. The changing of fall to winter shows the change from life to death, and apparently Shakespeare loved this person very much.
