Jack Rostetter
Dealing with the Devil Copyright 2003

Driving thru the midnight hours
On a dark and lonesome road.
Stayin awake, drunk on anger
Not clear where I was going.

When I come across this walkin man
Miles from anywhere.
Still not sure why I pulled over
When I caught his icy stare.

I knew that walker needed a ride
Before he’d even asked.
Didn’t say a word; just climbed in
and handed me his flask.

I took a man-sized drink from that dirty bottle
Heaven knows where it had been.
But, that smooth elixir had me telling that stranger
About all my earthly sins.

CHORUS:
I was dealing with the devil
On a cold and lonesome night
Ready to sell my soul to hell
And he made it all seem right
When you’re dealing with the devil
There’s a heavy price to pay
Cause there ain’t no way
you can walk away
From your final judgment day.

That walker began to hum a tune
And a chill ran up my spine.
was a song I’d written; in ‘92
and I’ve only played it in my mind.

He looked at me with an evil grin.
Said, sure is a catchy tune.
I’m sure that song could bring you fame & fortune
but there’s something you got to do.

He offered me his crooked hand
Said, shake and we’ll close this deal.
My head still spinning from drinking that poison
wasn’t sure if this was real.

He said, yes it’s true and what you should do
Is sign on this scarlet letter.
Just take my hand; I promise you man
I can change your life forever.

Chorus:
I was dealing with the devil
On a cold and lonesome night.
Ready to sell my soul to hell
And he made it all seem right
When you’re dealing with the devil
There’s a heavy price to pay
Cause there ain’t no way
you can walk away
From your final judgment day.

Something come over me, stronger than fear.
As I pulled into a filling station.
said I think I’ll go alone from here
And hold on to my salvation.

He frowned and turned as the door flew open.
got up and walked away.
But late at night I can still hear his laughter
'Can still hear him say.

I'll be right here if you change your mind,
And your thinking that you're ready to deal.
Walking out here in the dead of the night
and you can bet your soul that I am real!

CHORUS:
I’d been dealing with the devil
On a cold and lonesome night
Ready to sell my soul to hell
And he made it all seem right
When you’re dealing with the devil
There’s a heavy price to pay
Cause there ain’t no way
you can walk away
From your final judgment day.

I was dealing with the devil
On a cold and lonesome night…..
