Marz had to force himself to let go of Tristan's hand when Val sent him and Corum off to investigate the buildings. Luckily, they found a couple of beds in the first house they checked. The building was made up of one large room that held a fireplace, table with four chairs, a large trunk, and a tall wooden storage cabinet.

Remembering the zapping trap on the altar, Marz braced for the worse then flung open the double doors of the cabinet. When nothing shocked him he relaxed, letting his eyes run over the items on the shelves before him. A few bottles of wine and brandy graced the first shelf, sitting beside a number of clay mugs. The second shelf held two boxes of candles, a full lantern, several glass containers of oil, and flint and steel. A coil of rope sat upon the final shelf along with a box of clay pipes, cigarette paper, and a metal canister. Opening the canister revealed smoking tobacco. Obviously, the were-spiders liked to indulge their human side occasionally.

After brightening the room by lighting a few candles and setting them on the table, Marz moved to ignite the stack of wood in the fireplace before joining Corum by the trunk. It contained some fairly nice clothing, extra blankets, a small purse of coins, and a mace with an eerie golden glow surrounding it. Marz slid the handle of the mace through his waist belt then split the money with Corum.

Finding nothing else to investigate, the youths made their way back to Val. Marz stared at Argus, who hovered over the healer offering to assist him with Tristan. A very small twinge of guilt came over Marz for his earlier treatment of the priest. The man had only been trying to help when he dragged him away from the battle.

The ex-gang leader drew in a deep breath then took a step closer to Argus. "I noticed you don't have a weapon. Here, you can use this." He pressed the glowing mace into the priest's hand then spun around at the sound of a loud boom. A smile crossed his lips when he saw that Erlic, collapsing the opening that led up to the ruins, caused the noise. His eyes shifted to Barry floating in the steamy water of the hot spring. He broke out in laughter when the skull said something about bringing the gals into the water for a bath. Marz had to admit that he liked the way Barry thought!

Once Val finished his ministrations, Marz and Corum carried Tristan into the building they had explored. The wound in the ex-gang leader's shoulder pained him a little, but naturally he ignored it. Marz raised a brow when Tristan muttered the name, Illani. Fantasizing about beautiful women now, huh Tris? The thought made him smirk.

After getting Tristan situated on the bed, Marz retrieved a mug from the cabinet. He filled it with water from his skin, mixed in Val's herbs then sat down beside his lover. When the dragon announced that he needed to be entertained, Marz chuckled. "Like hell you do," he quipped. "What you really need is rest, and that's exactly what you're going to get."

He grinned when Tristan professed his love; the words making him feel all warm inside. "I love you too. Now drink this." Marz held the herbal concoction to his lips and made sure he drank it all down. He handed the empty cup to Corum then drew the blanker over his lover. "You have to sleep for a little while now Tris, so you'll heal faster." Marz ran a fingertip along Tristan's lips then kissed them gently. "Me and Corum are gonna go see if anyone needs our help with anything but we'll be back soon." He cut off his lover's protests with another kiss then ordered him to go to sleep before he exited the house with Corum following after him.

Once outside, Marz let his eyes do a slow sweep of the area. Jeremy and Saras were busy burning the spider carcasses that hadn't been destroyed by dragon fire. Thankfully, the smoke rose up and seemed to disappear through small cracks and holes in the ceiling some one hundred feet above them. Since the area was huge, the stench of burning flesh dissipated quickly as well.

"It looks like we're going to be camped here for a while," he said, turning to Corum. "What the hell are we gonna eat? Those spider things seemed to feed only on human corpses. There's probably no real food around and I left the food supply bag back at the tower." Marz glanced at Jeremy, who stood off in the distance. The otherworldly youth always had food. "Guess our meal might have to consist of candy bars, those Twinkie cakes, and bags of chips or whatever the hell Jeremy calls them." Marz wondered if Tristan had actually eaten any of the spiders while in dragon form. If not, he was going to be starving from lack of meat!
