Author: Saras
Subject: Panic
In reply to: Rowan 's message, "Just having a little fun" on 20:25:18 03/12/02 Tue

Saras screeched as he was hauled into the water again. He should have expected it, seeing the way Rowan walzed up. The man had dripped on him first, and then thrown an arm around his shoulder. It was inconsiderate, and Saras suspected deliberate, but because he was much too pleasant to actually say anything, didn't. He would have thought getting him wet like that would have been enough, but it wasn’t. Briefly startled at being pulled into the water, the genie did the first thing that reflect demanded, and yelped, his surprise only cut off by his head getting dragged under. He wasn't sure how, but his head broke the surface of the water and he sputtered and coughed, gasping at the air.

Panicking as he had the last time Rowan had dunked him, he latched on tightly to the first available, and nearest thing, which just happened to be Rowan. His anger was replaced by the fear of the water. He might not have been so bad, but he’d gotten his face wet and had been completely submerged and surprised. All self-control and the advice about not crying at every little thing evaporated. If his first reaction had been surprise and alarm, his second was the realization he was wet, and the part of him that had been created out of fire, panicked, because the one thing that could snuff out its life was all around him. Tears welled up in his eyes and clung to Rowan all the tighter, as the surprise left and was replaced with the very real knowledge that he coudln't swim.

“Woah, not so tight!”

As Rowan spoke, and began to pull him loose, Saras’s reaction was to cling tighter. Nothing short of being on shore or forced from Rowan was going to loosen him. The thought of floundering, alone and without anyone to keep him aloft, terrified him more then it should reasonably have. But Saras couldn’t help it. The fear was not something rational anymore, now that he was completely immersed in it. Had he not been dragged and pulled under, he might have kept his dignity and control, but not now. The tears in his eyes, which he fought to control were being held back by the slightest of conscious effort from the genie, but he was having difficulty maintaining that state and they threatened to spill down onto his cheeks.

“Now don’t start crying again,”

“Don’t let me go back under the water!” he said, his big brown tear filled eyes pleading into Rowan’s, only inches apart, since the Genie was determined not to let go of the one thing in reach that was keeping him out of the water. “Please, please don’t let me go back under…” he whispered.
