Ravin hung his head when the genie chastised him for not listening to him earlier. Saras' words hurt deeply because the thief knew they were true. Lately, he had been too self-absorbed to pay much attention to anyone. When did I start to neglect my friends? Sighing, he watched Saras rush off toward the pond. "No, wait," he said when Jeremy started to go after him. "Let me talk to him. It's what I should have done a lot sooner."

Once the otherworldly youth sat down, Ravin slowly got to his feet. Although he was still a little weak and sore from the chest wound, it no longer pained him as much as it did the night before. He tucked the slate and chalk into his pack then took a leisurely walk to the pond, coming up alongside of Saras a few minutes later.

When he saw the genie crying, Ravin felt like an absolute idiot. He didn't mean to hurt Saras and hoped he could make things up to him somehow. After easing himself down into a sitting position, he pulled out a kerchief, tapped the genie on his leg and handed it to him. "I'm sorry," he said, in all sincerity. "I wasn't angry at you about wish. In fact, the way it worked out is better, because it wouldn't be fair for me to know how to read and write so easily when others have to struggle for years to learn."

The thief ran a hand through his thick, unruly hair as he rested his back against a tree. "Being able to read and write anything on the slate will be a great aid to me. Now I don't have to bother anyone to teach me words since I can learn them myself after writing them on the slate."

Ravin untied his ale flask from his belt and took a drink before offering it to Saras. "I apologize for not listening to you before, but I'm here now, and ready to listen to anything you might have to say to me."
