ET 8

The Night of the Nurses’ Ball

**The Bike Shop**

“I can’t believe I’ve let you guys rope me into this,” Lucky complained as he stood by the door to Alison and Jamal’s apartment. He was wearing a black tuxedo, with a black dress shirt underneath. His hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, and he wore a pair of red tinted sunglasses that Alison said he had to wear to protect his anonymity. He argued that he didn’t need his anonymity protected, nobody knew who he was.

Well, one person knew who he was. Sly knew.

“Chill out Lucky, this will be fun,” Sly said with a grin as he patted Lucky on the back. Sly wore a traditional tux with bow tie.

“You’ve got to come Lucky, otherwise you’d be here by yourself and Helena could easily get to you. And you came to Alison and me to help you—Helena getting you isn’t what I call helping,” Jack argued with a smile. “Do you really think I like wearing one of these monkey suits? I’m only going because asked me to go,” Jack noted as he motioned to his black suit, accentuated by a crisp royal blue shirt and a satin black hand tie.

“But Jamal is back to take her Jack. You and I could have skipped the whole thing and gotten ribs at Eli’s,” Lucky said with a smirk.

Sly laughed and smiled as he looked at his cousin. After meeting Jack on the docks and seeing Luka, Jack explained the entire situation to Sly and then brought him to Lucky. There the cousin’s had a reunion and Lucky seemed to relax a bit more, knowing he had another person on his side. Sly had also reunited with the rest of the Spencers and had to pretend that Luka was Lucky. Oddly, Luka didn’t remember his run in with Sly on the docks, but Sly kept that tidbit to himself and from the rest of the Spencers. Laura asked him to sit at their table and he gladly accepted.

“Sorry to cut and run fellas, but I’ve got to get going so I can meet your family to go to this ball. Can I pretend to be someone else to avoid this?” Sly joked with a wink for Lucky, he was probably the only person who Lucky would let get away with such a crack. “See you there?”

Lucky frowned as Jack nodded, “If we don’t actually make it into the ballroom, we’ll be in the lobby.”

“Cool, later—and Lucky, try smiling,” Sly urged as he ran out of the bike shop.

Lucky turned to Jack and took off his glasses for a moment, “So, how pissed is Jamal about me—in general?”

“Well, he’s still a bit freaked out, but I don’t think he’s pissed anymore. Granted, he still thinks you are just some stranger we hired to work in the shop—one who doesn’t do much work, but a worker nonetheless,” Jack explained. “He doesn’t suspect anything, if that’s what you were worrying about.”

“What is taking them so long?” Lucky murmured as he glanced at the clock on the wall. Just as he made his complaint known the door to the apartment opened and Jamal, wearing a traditional black tux, and Alison stepped out.

Both Lucky and Jack stared at Alison in appreciation. She was wearing a form fitting, strapless champagne colored gown. Her blonde hair was flowing over her shoulders perfectly. Jamal smiled at her proudly as the other two guys stumbled over themselves to pick their jaws up off the ground.

“You look absolutely beautiful Alison, Jamal is one lucky man,” Lucky observed as Jamal gave him a weary glance.

Jack stepped towards Alison and smiled at her softly, “You are radiant, like an angel or something.”

Jamal ignored the compliment, he didn’t think Jack had a thing for Alison—he thought it was Lucky he was to be worried about.

“And you look handsome, Livvie will be so disappointed she missed tonight,” Alison noted. “She was going to come, but she wanted to stay with Rachel a bit longer.”

“Shall we go? I’m really not looking forward to this,” Lucky complained. Jack went to hold his arm out for Alison to take when he realized Jamal was her date for the night. Lucky observed the moment and laughed to himself, “Or maybe something interesting will happen that doesn’t have to do with me.”

Jack shot Lucky a glare, “Let’s get out of here.”

Lucky held his arm out to Jack and smirked, “My darling, shall we?”

Alison laughed as Jack jokingly took his arm, “You two are such dorks.”

**The Cottage**

Emily rushed into the cottage and ran straight for the stairs, leaving Zander alone in the living room with Luka and Nikolas. He nodded at them awkwardly, “Guys.”

“Zander, I’m pleased you and Emily decided to ride with us to the Ball, it’ll be fun,” Nikolas noted with a grin. “And she looked beautiful—in that blur I saw of her anyway.”

“She is beautiful,” Zander said with awe as he cast a glance at the stairs before sitting down on the couch.

Luka stared at him oddly, slightly unnerving the young man. Zander adjusted the coat of his tux before pulling at the collar of his shirt, he opted for no tie, though the shirt was strangling him anyway.

“Shut up Emily, please!” Gia shouted, her voice growing louder as she came to the stairs.

“You are no fun Gia,” Emily complained.

Gia floated down the stairs, looking every bit the model that she was in her red, beaded, Chloe Morgan original that looked as if it were painted on. It hugged her perfect body in all the right spots and floated perfectly in all the others.

Nikolas smiled gratefully as he moved to the stairs to greet his beautiful girlfriend. “Gia you look . . . ravishing,” he gushed, kissing her deeply.

“Please, I don’t need to see that,” Luka complained as he stood up.

Emily, wearing a frown because Gia wouldn’t cooperate in her grand idea for the perfect entrance, came down the stairs next. Her simple, black gown made her look years older, as did her hair, styled neatly in a graceful bun on top of her head. She walked over to Zander and took his hand.

“You two make a gorgeous couple,” Emily observed as she looked at Nikolas and Gia. Nikolas in his black suit and cream colored shirt and tie looked elegant and handsome.

“What? Am I chopped liver?” Luka joked as he looked impatiently at the stairs, waiting for Elizabeth to come down next.

Emily went to the man she saw as her childhood best friend and gave him a quick hug before studying his suit with scrutiny. A traditional tux with the exception of the silvery blue tie, his hair seemingly standing straight up, he was the picture of a trendy American male, handsome in his own way. “You look passable Spencer,” Emily teased with a laugh.

“Damn, so much for an entrance,” Elizabeth declared from the bottom of the stairs. Everyone was too busy watching Emily and Lucky that they hadn’t noticed Elizabeth come down the stairs.

If the girls looked like old time movie stars Gia was Sophia Loren, Emily Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth looked like Grace Kelly in her shimmering silver gown with its formfitting bodice flowing bottom. She opted to wear her hair swept up off her neck.

“So, what do you think?” Elizabeth asked Luka. Ever since her lunch with Spence, and the kiss they shared, Elizabeth had felt so guilty that she was putting extra attention into her relationship with Lucky. He had been so distant though, that she wondered why she was even trying. The closer she tried to get, the more he seemed to try to pull away. If things didn’t get better soon, Elizabeth was going to make her exit from the cottage sooner than planned.

“You look lovely, I’ll have the prettiest girl on my arm tonight,” he said with a smile, kissing her.

“Come on, if you don’t want to watch it, neither do I,” Nikolas complained with a laugh.

“Let’s go kids, our pumpkin awaits,” Gia urged as she motioned for everyone to leave. Emily and Zander were out the door first.

“This is so cool, a limo!” Emily said with a happy sigh as Zander led her to the car.

“You make it seem like you have never been in one before,” Zander observed with a chuckle. “You are driven around in one half the time.”

“I know…it just seems special tonight.”

Nikolas and Gia followed them to the car. Elizabeth and Luka stopped on the porch. She looked up at him, so much excitement and joy in her eyes, “You know what this is like?”

“What?” he asked happily, unable to deny that her excitement was contagious.

“The prom. We never got to go to ours . . . this is like our chance. Our best friends, all dressed up, a limo,” Elizabeth explained with a sigh.

“Whatever you want—tonight is all about you,” he told her. And Luka believed it. But somewhere in his mind he knew it was about something more, something much worse. He had a mission to fulfill.

The straggling couple climbed into the limo and Luka looked at Zander, a feeling of great dread in his gut.

He had a mission to fulfill, even if he knew, deep down, it was so terribly wrong.

**Port Charles Hotel—Versailles Room**

“Oh no, Ned, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Lucy cried as she looked at one of her performers for the night.

“I’m sorry Lucy, laryngitis,” Ned said hoarsely, his voice barely audible. “I think I spent too much time rehearsing.”

“This is a disaster!”

Luke and Sly wandered back to where Lucy was about to fly into a fit of hysterical rage. “What’s wrong darlin’?” Luke asked an obviously shaken Lucy.

“I can’t perform my number tonight,” Ned coughed.

“That’s a shame,” Luke said nonchalantly. “Can’t you just find a replacement Luce?”

“Can’t you just find a replacement?” Lucy mocked before shoving Luke. “It’s not that easy Luke—I can’t just find a replacement.”

“Sure you can, what’s the song—I’ll sing it,” Sly offered with a proud grin.

“First of all—who are you? Secondly, can you sing?”

“Lucy,” Luke placed his arm around Lucy’s shoulder, “This is my nephew Sly, remember, Bill’s son?”

“Sly? Sly? Oh yeah, I remember Lucky mentioning you when he performed a few years ago—something about you replacing him for his number,” Lucy recalled with a laugh. “So you can really sing?”

Sly nodded his head with a smile, “Yep, just tell me what I’ve got to do, and I’ll do it.”

“Oh, you’re a lifesaver!” Lucy declared, kissing the young man on the cheek before pulling him away to fill him in on the details of Ned’s number. Ned went with them to provide as much help as possible.

“Luke, there you are, can I speak with you?” Kevin asked as he approached Luke.

“Depends on what you want,” Luke joked.

“It’s about Lucky,” Kevin said and suddenly Luke was all business.

“What about the cowboy?”

“He’s stopped coming to his sessions—again,” Kevin told Luke. “Helena’s programming is so deep, he won’t be cured after a handful of sessions, despite what he thinks. Will you please convince him to please come.”

Luke frowned in anger, “That kid—he thinks he’s invincible. You know he’s living at Nikolas’s cottage because he thinks those three kids will protect him from Helena? I just can’t get through to him doc.”

“I understand Luke, just try to get him to come back to therapy. It’s for his own good.”

Luke nodded solemnly and agreed to talk to Lucky.

**

Lucky and Jack sat on one of the benches in an uncrowded part of the lobby that led to the Versailles Room. Both looked bored and uncomfortable in their suits.

“Tell me Jack, are you falling for Alison?” Lucky asked bluntly. He squinted at all the familiar faces passing him and going into the ballroom, of course they were all tinted red because of Alison’s “fabulous fashion accessory”.

“Well, you cut through all the crap—don’t you?”

Lucky sighed, “I’ve learned all the false pretences and crap we put up to protect ourselves only hurts us in the end.”

“Makes sense.”

“Answer my question.”

Jack groaned, letting his head slam against the wall behind them. “Yes, no, I don’t know . . . I’m not supposed to, that much I do know. I’m with Livvie, I love Livvie. Livvie is Alison’s best girl friend. Alison is with Jamal, Alison loves Jamal. Jamal is my first real friend in Port Charles. Put all that together and me falling for Alison could only spell disaster. Being with her would be . . . it would be betraying my one of my best friends. I can’t do that.”

Lucky nodded sympathetically. “Try feeling like you are betraying yourself because you are falling all over again for the girl you never stopped loving.”

“What?”

“I’m falling in love with Elizabeth all over again, in spite of myself,” Lucky said tiredly. “And yet, because she thinks Luka is me I feel like I’m betraying Lucky Spencer, myself, because I want her to leave him, the man she thinks is me, to be with me, who I really am,” Lucky whispered sharply, confusing himself.

“Let me get this straight. You are beating yourself up because Elizabeth likes Spence and you want her to leave Lucky for Spence. But because she thinks the imposter is you, you feel like Elizabeth actually being with you, and not who she thinks is Lucky, is betraying you?”

“Yeah, I think . . . this is all so messed up,” Lucky complained. “I just want these games to be over with. I want everyone to know who that joke really is—who I really am. And then I want them all to pay for their sins, I want them to beg for my forgiveness,” Lucky added bitterly.

“Even Elizabeth—who you are falling in love with all over again?”

Lucky dropped his head into his hands and moaned. “Do you know how messed up this all is Jack? How can I possibly love and hate someone so much at the same time. I want nothing more than to be with Elizabeth again, yet I think of her with him and . . .”

“Man, here I thought falling for my best friend’s girlfriend sucked,” Jack said with a sigh as he grabbed Lucky’s shoulder. “Come on man, let’s go to the bar and get a drink.”

**

Lucy came out onto the stage, turned for everyone in attendance to see her latest, glamorous dress, and waited for the applause to die down a bit.

“Right now Ned Ashton was to perform much like he always does. But because some slave driver forced him to rehearse so much, he has laryngitis. So, to fill in for him, straight from sunny California is Sly Eckert . . .”

The curtains parted and Sly stepped onto the stage, backed by Ned’s band, microphone in hand.

Something is about to give
I can feel it coming
I think I know what it is
I’m not afraid to die
I’m not afraid to live
And when I’m flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

Jack and Lucky stood in the back of the ballroom, watching the performance. Lucky smiled, proud of his cousin, but his attention was quickly drawn from Sly on stage to Elizabeth who was crossing to the balcony.

“I’ll be right back Jack,” Lucky whispered as he followed Elizabeth to the balcony. Jack watched, making sure nobody followed Lucky.

‘Cause hardness, it sets in
You need some protection
The thinner the skin

I want you to know
You don’t need me anymore
I want you to know
You don’t need anyone, anything at all

Lucky looked at Elizabeth, amazed at how stunning she looked in the moonlight. He was drawn to her, unable to turn away even when he knew he should.

“Spence,” she said in surprise when she turned to see him staring at her. She wasn’t scared though, there was such tenderness and loving in his eyes she couldn’t be scared. “How long have you been there?”

“Just a moment, I didn’t want to frighten you,” Lucky said as he walked towards her. “You look so . . . to put into words how you look wouldn’t even begin to explain it.”

“How do you do that?” Elizabeth asked.

“Do what?”

“How do you say the perfect thing?”

Lucky shook his head, “I don’t know if I say the perfect thing.”

“You do…you have such a way of making every moment poetic. How do you do it?”

“I don’t know,” Lucky shrugged, “Maybe you just inspire me.”

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to say what it is will break you
I don’t know which way the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
Don’t wanna see you cry
I know that this not goodbye

“I bet you like this song,” Elizabeth commented, trying to cut the tension a bit. “It’s U2.”

Lucky looked surprised, Helena hadn’t kept him up to date on the latest musical releases. “It’s a great song, that Sly’s a pretty good singer.”

“I bet you’d sing it great,” she told him with a smile.

Lucky grinned, “What makes you think that?”

“You kind of look like Bono right now,” Elizabeth noted with a teasing smirk. She reached up for his glasses and put them on, “How do I look?”

“Adorable,” Lucky reached to take them back but she held them away from him. “Come on Elizabeth, give ‘em back.”

“Say please,” she teased. Lucky reached after her, nearly getting her in the spot under her ribcage he knew was most ticklish. “Don’t make me laugh, Lucky, I swear . . .”

They both froze. Did she know? Why would she call him that? Lucky was stunned into silence.

Elizabeth hung her had in embarrassment and handed the glasses back to him.

“Sorry about that, I didn’t mean to call you Lucky,” she said, wincing slightly. She was blushing, Lucky could tell, and he knew it had nothing to do with the red tint of his sunglasses. “It just came out . . .you see, Lucky used to try to tickle me in that exact spot. I’m sorry, I didn’t . . .”

“Shh,” Lucky whispered, touching his finger to her lips. “It’s not a problem.”

Elizabeth let out a deep sigh of relief as Lucky took a tiny, tension-breaking step backwards.

“So, why are you out here all by yourself? Where’s Lucky?”

In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There’s a kite blowing out of control on the breeze
I wonder what’s gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me

I’m a man, I’m not a child
A man who sees
The shadow behind your eyes

“I needed some air,” Elizabeth said with a sigh.

“Now tell me the real reason,” Lucky urged. He could tell, just by looking in her eyes, that she was feeling more, that she was overwhelmed.

“You’re something else Spence,” she told him. “But if you have to know, this is the first Nurses Ball I’ve been to with Lucky since before the fire. And for some reason it brought back a lot of memories. I needed to take a break for a minute. So sue me.”

“I understand, more than you can imagine,” Lucky said as he realized what balcony they were standing on. It was where he and Nikolas almost got into a fight before Jason broke it up. That day was so long ago, it felt like it happened to another person.

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to say what it is will break you
I don’t know which way the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
Don’t wanna see you cry
I know that this not goodbye

“I don’t mean to keep you, if you wanted to go back in . . .” Lucky said, pointing over his shoulder into the ballroom.

“That’s alright, I’m fine where I am,” Elizabeth told him honestly. “I didn’t see you in there, what table were you at?”

“I wasn’t really at any table. I mean, I came with Alison Barrington and Jamal Woods and Jack Ramsey, but Jack and I’ve been hanging out in the bar all night. This whole scene isn’t really our thing,” Lucky explained.

“Ah, a bit more light is shed on the mystery of Spence,” Elizabeth said as she waved her hands around Lucky. “You didn’t realize you did that, did you?”

“Did what?”

“Tell me who your friends are and that you don’t like big parties,” Elizabeth pointed out. “Don’t worry,” she began as she started towards the ballroom, “I like a good mystery. And that, Spence, you are.”

Did I waste it?
Not so much I couldn’t taste it
Life should be fragrant
Roof top to the basement
The last of the rock stars
When hip-hop drove the big cars
In the time when new media
Was the big idea
That was the big idea

Lucky watched Elizabeth go back into the ballroom, shaking his head proudly. She certainly wasn’t the young, naive girl she once was. No, tragedy will make someone grow up very fast. And she certainly grew up into an amazing woman, Lucky only wished he had been around to watch it happen.

**

Carly proudly strode into the Versailles Room, Stavros on her arm, ready to cause some trouble. And trouble she got.

Almost instantly Sonny was on his feet and heading in her direction. She couldn’t tell if he was jealous, angry, or just bored. No matter what, she’d have some fun with him.

“Carly, what are you doing here?” Sonny asked, sizing up Carly’s date for the evening.

“What? Didn’t think you think I would come? Oh, I know I was supposed to stay at home drowning my sorrows in a pint of chunky monkey—right? Get over yourself Sonny, I certainly did.”

“That’s not what I meant Carly, but fine, be that way,” Sonny said with a sigh. He turned to her date and extended his hand, “Sonny Corinthos, and you are?”

“Stavros Cassadine,” came Luke’s voice. Sonny turned to find his former partner in an exasperated state.

“If it isn’t the one, the only Luke Spencer . . . and looking so much older than I remembered,” Stavros cracked.

“I can’t believe you dared to show your face here you pig,” Luke hissed holding Laura behind him. “Leave.”

“He’s my date Luke,” Carly informed him.

“Have you finally completely flipped your lid Caroline?” Luke asked incredulously.

“No, she’s obviously finally thinking clearly,” Stavros corrected with a grin. “Lasha, my love, you look exquisite.”

“Don’t talk to her, don’t even look at her,” Luke warned as he led Laura back to their table.

Now it was Stefan and Alexis’s turn to confront their thought dead brother.

“Carly, what are you doing?” Alexis asked, clearly worried.

“Having a little fun with your brother while you have some fun with my husband.”

“Carly you know that isn’t what is going on,” Alexis said. “I’m sure you know all about Stavros—why would you even think of being with him?”

“I just love this, talking about me like I’m not even here,” Stavros said with a laugh. “What about you Stefan, don’t you have anything to say about me? Some great word of warning Caroline should head.”

Stefan clenched his jaw and looked his brother in the eye, “Stay away from Nikolas Stavros or you’ll learn the type of man I’ve become.” With that Stefan turned on his heels and walked away. Sonny and Alexis did the same.

“Sorry about that, I didn’t quite expect it to go over so badly,” Carly apologized.

“Nonsense my dear,” Stavros began with a wicked grin. “That was exactly how I imagined it. And it’s only going to get better.”

**

“Hey, there you are,” Alison said as she found Lucky standing near the balcony. He had watched the entire confrontation with Stavros and was growing very weary.

“I have to get out of here Alison. That guy over there, he’s Stavros Cassadine, he knows who I am. Not to mention if he’s here, Helena can’t be far behind,” Lucky warned nervously.

“Fine, then we’ll leave,” Alison told him. “I already dropped a hint to Jamal that I wasn’t feeling well. Once we get home I’ll call and tell him that I got sick and you took me home. No problem.”

“I don’t need to be babysat Alison,” Lucky told her with half a grin.

“That is not what I’m doing . . . I want to leave, this party is a drag,” Alison noted. “Come, let’s go,” she grabbed his arm and led him through the back of the ballroom so nobody saw him.

**

“Little brother, there you are,” Chris called out as he finally found Jack.

“What do you want Chris?” Jack asked. Lucky had just taken off out of the hotel and Alison followed, he wanted to go with them but was now going to be held up by Chris.

“I want to talk about the little science experiment your dear friend Alison has me working on. And don’t deny it, I know you are in on this together. I should let you know that I have Eve working with me, and we may have figured out what was in that water sample—but we want to know exactly what is going on. So start talking Jack.”

“I can’t tell you,” Jack claimed as he looked to the door.

“Why not? You know what is going on Jack. How heavy is this—what kind of danger am I putting Eve in?” Chris demanded. “Tell me Jack, I have to know. If I know who I’m dealing with it might make things move along faster as well.”

“Listen, I personally can’t tell you—it’s not my story to tell. But if you are close to figuring things out I can take you to who can tell you,” Jack said. “First, tell me what you’ve figured out.”

“In that water that Alison thinks has mind controlling elements is a virus neither Eve nor I have ever scene and we think we found the special trigger for it. We have no idea how it works, so if we are dealing with people accomplished at mind control it’ll help us figure out how to cure the virus or at least stop it. Eve is working on an anti-virus and she’s very close. So take me to whoever can shed some light on this science project before I put the breaks on it all together.”

“Alright, but if you are lying Chris…you’ll really regret it. This is bigger than you know,” Jack warned as the left the hotel.

**Alley Behind The Hotel**

“Please Zander, I forgot my purse, please Zander be my errand boy because I’m completely helpless and my boyfriend is MIA,” Zander muttered in frustration, his suit coat thrown over his shoulder. He walked through the alley, taking what he thought was a shortcut to where the limos were parked.

Gia had forgotten her purse in the limo and because she couldn’t find Nikolas, who was off mingling, or Lucky, who was off doing his own thing, she badgered Zander into doing it for her. Of course, Emily looked at him with that ‘please, if you do this you’ll be so rewarded later’ look and he was a goner.

It didn’t mean he would be pleasant about the situation.

Zander quickened his pace, not wanting to keep Princess Gia waiting. He stopped though when he thought he heard another set of footsteps behind him. He turned and looked, and sure enough there was someone following him.

The alley was dark and shadowed, so Zander couldn’t really tell who was behind him.

“Who’s there?” he asked calmly. His run in on the docks with Helena the other day, and Alexis’s warning had him nervous and a bit paranoid.

Silence.

“Who’s there? Answer me damnit, I’ll kick your ass,” Zander shouted, part in fear, part in anger.

“Just me Zander, chill out,” Luka said as he stepped out of the shadows. He held out his hand and smiled, “You’re paranoid.”

“Paranoid, probably, maybe I’m just perceptive,” Zander muttered as he tried to see what Luka was concealing in his right hand. “Why are you down here?”

“You were taking so long, Emily sent me to see if you got lost,” Luka noted smugly. “Seems you haven’t gotten lost.

“Yep, not lost, my short cut must not have been a short cut after all,” Zander noted as Luka moved closer to him. “You can go back Lucky, I’ll be fine. I’m a big boy.”

“I’m sure,” Luka said coolly as he put his left arm around Zander. Before Zander could react Lucky had him restrained and was hold something cold against his throat.

“What’s going on here? Let go of me Lucky.”

“I can’t. I have to complete the mission. I have to eliminate you,” Luka said icily, complete detachment in his voice. “You have to die.”

“Why? I didn’t do anything you man, I didn’t do anything to you,” Zander said as he realized it was a knife being held to his throat. Luka was going to slit his throat.

“Stop whining you child. Take it like a man,” Luka ordered as he began to pierce the skin on Zander’s throat.

“Please man, stop, think of Emily, think of what it’ll do to her,” Zander cried, fearing for not only his life but everyone else’s.

“It’s too late Zander, you should have left when you had the chance,” Luka said sounding almost sympathetic.

“What’s going on? What are you doing?” someone yelled from the other end of the alley.

Luka’s attention was pulled for just a moment, but it was long enough for Zander to slip from his grasp.

Luka panicked, he wasn’t going to be able to do this the way Helena wanted. But he had to complete the mission, that much he knew. So without thinking Luka lunged at Zander, sliding the knife blade into his abdomen repeatedly.

“Get off him,” the person screamed, throwing Luka off of Zander.

Luka looked up at the man, his eyes widening with shock, fear, and question. “You? You.”

Lucky stood over Zander and Luka, his attention on his double at the moment. “You know who I am? Do you know who you are?” Lucky asked, his voice breaking.

“I don’t know who you are but . . . you are going to pay, you got in the way,” Luka said as he stumbled to his feet.

“Luc—Spence,” Alison corrected as she came into the alley, having followed Lucky. “Oh my God, what happened?”

“You and her, you won’t get away with this. She’ll make you pay,” Luka said calmly as he walked away, in the direction Zander had been going.

Lucky watched Luka walk away as Alison kneeled beside Zander, not knowing what to do.

“Are you alright?” she asked, trying to get his attention. He wasn’t dead, but he was losing a lot of blood and would probably slip out of consciousness any minute.

“Lucky, put some pressure on one of his wounds, I’ll call 911,” Alison ordered, forgetting to call Lucky Spence, figuring Zander wouldn’t really remember that little detail.

Lucky knelt down beside Alison and Zander’s jacket from the ground, and put it over the knife wounds to help stop the bleeding. Lucky heard Alison call for help, and he saw himself keeping pressure on Zander’s wounds, but everything else was a haze.

This was bad. A young man laid bleeding on the ground, he would have been killed instantly if Lucky hadn’t appeared when he did.

But as bad as it was, Lucky knew things were about to get much worse before they got better.

That is, if it could even get better.
