Episode 2: Laying Groundwork

Chapter 1

“Oh, this is bloody wonderful,” Spike sighed as he, Carly, and Hannah took a tour of Wyndymerre.

“Spike, why did you have to make Stefan a vampire, a Cassadine?” Carly whined. “I’m a Spencer and we don’t exactly get along with Cassadines.”

“Oh since when are you a Spencer? Since you almost tried to eat your cousin last night? Or since you got us found out at Luke’s?” Hannah snapped at Carly.

“Wait! Back up,” Spike ordered. They went out feeding? Alone? And they went to a club? He was going to need to teach these two the rules. “You went out after I saved you from Buffy? I said no feeding alone. Why do you insist on disobeying my orders?”

“But I was hungry and the bed bunny slipped off somewhere . . .” Carly explained half interestedly, examining her fingernails. “But those damn slayers found me . . .and I used to like Liz! Though, her friendship with Jason always made me a bit nervous . . .”

“So did my friendship with Jason. Admit it Carly, you don’t trust anyone and you can’t hold your man. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jason already found another pest to hang out with.”

“Yeah, well . . .” Carly paused, searching her mind for a comeback. “I bet Sonny’s found another little Brenda look-a-like tramp to keep him company.”

“I bet I can get Sonny and make him one of us before you can do the same with Jason. After all, you never succeed.”

“You think you’re so sure? Then you are on! I’ll have Jason Morgan a member of the undead before you can even attempt to sink your easy little teeth into Sonny Corinthos.”

“Wait, wait, wait . . . Did you say Corinthos and Morgan?” Spike asked nervously.

“Yeah, why?” Carly asked, quite annoyed.

“Nope, they are not coming in here,” he said definitively waving his arms around, nearly hitting Hannah.

“Why not? I though you needed an ‘army’? You had no problem turning Stefan Cassadine into a vampire, why can’t I get Jason?”

“First of all, Stefan is serving a purpose. This house is our hideout with very little sunlight, exactly what we need. Secondly,” Spike paused, swallowing hard. He turned his back to the girls in an attempt to regain his composure.

“What is it Spike?” Carly asked worriedly. She would never admit it to anyone but she was rather fond of Spike, not to mention she wasn’t to sure what being a vampire meant.

“I don’t . . .I’m afraid . . .vampires and mobsters don’t mix. It’s just something that doesn’t go down. They can’t . . .it won’t work. Enough with the questions, no Morgan or Corinthos, final.” With that Spike turned and stormed down one of the secret passageways.

“Great, now we’ll have to find someone else to turn. Because frankly, Spike and Stefan aren’t my cup of tea. Stefan’s still sleeping for goodness sakes,” Hannah groaned, following Spike.

“I don’t know, there’s something mysterious about Stefan,” Carly whispered.

“Ah ha! Finally something!” they heard Spike shout and ran to see what he was excited about.

In his hands was a scroll, which he removed from a secret compartment in wall of the tunnel. An evil and delighted grin was dancing on his face as he read the scroll. “Oh girls, this bloody marvelous. Marvelous!”

“What, what is it?” Hannah asked, peering over his shoulder. “I can’t understand that, what is it . . .Latin?”

“Yeah, the damnedest best language in the world,” he laughed.

“Why?” Carly rolled her eyes, wishing he’d get to the point.

“All the great spells and secrets of the world are written in Latin. Much like this dandy scroll I hold in my hands at this very moment.”

“What does it say?”

“My Latin is a tad rusty but it mentions the Hellmouth, something about unlimited power and . . . gemma a potentia . . .”

“Gemma a whatia?” Hannah muttered.

“Sounds like a lot of nonsense to me. Like there is such thing as unlimited power?”

“Yeah, but you didn’t believe in vampires until a few days ago.”

“Watch it Hannah dear, I can still wipe the floor with you. And now I know how to put an end to you for good,” Carly warned.

“Will you two birds shut your traps, I’m trying to think!” Spike shouted. “I believe gemma a potentia means . . .Gem of Power. What the hell is the Gem of Power?”

~*~

Liz sat on her bed with a pile of books around her, trying desperately to do some studying before she had to patrol that night. Her last class of the day had ended about an hour ago, and her roommate had been gone all afternoon, so she finally had some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, studying seemed to be the last thing her brain wanted to do. The events of the previous night kept replaying themselves over and over again, completely distracting her from her schoolwork. On top of that, she was exhausted from patrolling so late and not sleeping well.

“Come on, Liz, you’re a Slayer, how difficult can a little European History be?” She flipped through some pages, forcing herself to read the text, gradually becoming more focused on it. Just as she had managed to block out everything but what she was reading, there was a knock on the door.

“What?” she shouted, her irritation at being interrupted apparent in her voice. The door opened
and Lucky peered into the room, looking very bewildered.

“Um, is this a bad time?” he asked, seeing the sea of books around her. Liz smiled and shook her head. “No, I was just studying. Well, trying to study. Sorry about yelling like that, I’m just tired and cranky today.”

Lucky came into the room and sat on the edge of her roommate’s bed, since hers was covered in
books and papers. “You do look kind of tired. Did you get any sleep last night?”

“Not really,” she said, closing up her books and tossing them on the floor. She had a feeling she
wouldn’t be doing any more studying that day. Lucky’s presence had pretty much killed her
concentration. She looked up at him and saw that he had a Band-Aid covering the bite marks
from last night. “How’s the neck?”

He automatically reached up and touched it, then smiled. “Okay, although people think I’m trying
to cover a hickey with this thing. They keep bugging me, asking who it’s from.”

Liz chuckled. “Tell them it’s from your cousin, that’ll shut them up!”

Lucky made a face and shivered at the thought, causing Liz to laugh. “I can’t believe Carly is a
vampire. If my aunt ever finds out, it’ll kill her...”

“Yeah, Bobbie really loves her, doesn’t she?” Liz asked, laying on her stomach in an effort to get
more comfortable. “Just remember, you can’t tell her.”

“I know. Trust me, I’m not going to be telling anyone about any of this! I’m still too confused
about it myself, anyway.”

They fell into an uncomfortable silence for a few minutes, not sure what to say to each other
anymore. Finally, Lucky took a deep breath and looked over at her. “So, what happened last
night?”

“You mean, Carly biting you..?” she started to ask, pretty sure that wasn’t what he meant.

Lucky shook his head. “No, I meant with us, after all that.” He looked down into his lap
nervously, not sure what was going on with them. Liz was his best friend, he could talk to her
about anything, but suddenly he was all jittery and tongue-tied. He stood up and began to pace the
room, not sure what else to do with himself.

“Oh, that,” Liz said softly, looking down at her hands. She smiled at the memory of being so close to him, wondering what it would have been like if they had actually kissed. She chuckled softly, and Lucky turned to look at her. “Poor Angel, he looked like he wanted to
crawl under a rock when he saw us!”

‘Poor Angel?’ Lucky thought incredulously. ‘We almost kissed, and all she can say is Poor
Angel?’ He cleared his throat and walked over to her, sitting on the edge of her bed. “I’m sure he’ll recover.”

“Oh, I know, he just looked kind of embarrassed, that’s all. I think he thought he was
interrupting....” she trailed of, not sure if she should say it or not. She forced herself to look up at
Lucky, surprised to find that he was staring intently at her. As their eyes met, he smiled slightly.

“Interrupting what?” Lucky asked, urging her to continue. He had come over mainly because he
hadn’t seen her all day and missed her, but he also wanted to figure out what was going on between them now. Instead, they were talking about Angel, and it was all he could do not to scream in frustration. No wonder Xander hated the guy!

Liz felt like she was drowning in his steady gaze. “Um, I don’t know. If he hadn’t shown up, what would have...” She was afraid to finish her question. What if it was just a fluke, a result of Lucky almost dying? People do strange things in situations like that, things they wouldn’t normally do. What if he didn’t really like her that way, but he was confused, maybe even a little delirious from the blood loss?

Lucky could see that she was struggling with something, but wasn’t sure what it was. Maybe he
was wrong after all, and she didn’t like him as more than a friend. For all he knew, if he had
kissed her last night, he could have ruined everything. Maybe Angel interrupting was a good thing after all. Liz was his best friend, he couldn’t risk losing her just because he was starting to fall for her. A lot had happened yesterday, maybe he was just confused about his feelings, maybe it was just gratitude to her for saving his life, nothing more. He knew, deep down, that it was more than that, but chose to remain in denial a bit longer. Their friendship was too
important to jeopardize with romantic feelings. Then why did he keep wanting to kiss her?

“Lucky?” Liz asked softly, sensing that he had drifted off somewhere. She reached out and rested her hand on his knee, trying to snap him out of his fugue.

“Hmm?” he asked distantly. After a moment, he came back to reality and shook his head, looking
back at her. “Sorry, what did you say?”

Before she could answer, there was a loud knock on the door. “Yeah?” she shouted, disappointed
that they were being interrupted again.

Buffy opened the door and stepped inside, stopping as she saw the two sitting on the bed. “Um, Liz, Giles just called. He needs us to go over to his place.” Now she knew how Angel must have
felt last night. There was definitely something going on between them. Liz sighed and slid off the bed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I don’t think. Probably just another research party. Lots of old dusty books.” She smiled cheerfully. “And tea. He’s British, so there’s always tea.”

Liz chuckled and grabbed her purse, then looked back at Lucky who was standing behind her.
“Sorry, but it sounds like I have to go do this.”

“Buffy, are your other friends going to be there?” he asked, not wanting to be left behind.
She nodded slowly, seeing where he was going with this.

“Yeah, they usually help out.”

Lucky smiled and looked back over at Liz. “Then I’m going too. I’m good at research, especially
on the Internet.”

Liz looked over at Buffy hopefully. “Is that okay?”

“Sure, why not?” Buffy shrugged and opened the door. “He can help Willow with the computer stuff. I can’t wait to see what Giles has to say when he finds out our Scooby Gang just got bigger!”

“Scooby Gang?” Lucky asked.

Buffy chuckled as they walked down to the elevator. “It’s a long story.”

“Hey, did Angel ever find you last night?” Liz asked suddenly, remembering his request to tell her he was looking for her.

Buffy sighed, a sad, dreamy look in her eyes. “Yeah, he did.”

‘Great,’ Lucky thought bitterly. ‘Here we go with the Angel stuff again!’

“Honey, I’ve got to go out for a little bit. I’ll be . . .” Alexis called out, stopping when Jax entered the living room of the penthouse, a frustrated expression on his face.

“What was that?” he asked, staring her down.

“I’ve got to go out.”

“For what?”

“Research . . .for a case, it’s really boring but has to be done. I have to find out if there are any precedents . . .”

Alexis stopped, noticing the disbelieving look on her husband’s face. “What?”

“Research, again? With who, that Giles guy?”

“What?” was all she could say.

“Alexis, what’s going on? Every night for over a week you’ve gone out, and you seem to be spending a lot of time with Giles. Alexis are you . . .”

“A watcher!” she exclaimed, much to his surprise.

“Having an affair . . .what did you say?” he asked, much bewildered.

Alexis’s hand flew to her forehead as she groaned, mumbling something under her breath. “Oh you think I’m having an affair. Jax, never I’m totally in love with you.”

“That’s good to know, but what the heck is a watcher? Is this some twisted Cassadine thing? What do you watch?”

“Here we go,” Alexis sighed, leading Jax to the couch.

She looked into his big blue eyes and smiled. She couldn’t believe how lucky she was to have such a wonderful husband, he was always so accepting of everything. Alexis only wondered if Jax would be able to accept this.

“Are you alright honey, you look . . .” Jax shook his head. Gently he took his wife’s hands into his and smiled, hoping to put her at ease.

“What I’m about to tell you is going to sound . . .unreal, literally. You are going to think I’m insane, you probably won’t believe it, but it is all true. There are plenty of people who will back me up.”

“Alexis, you don’t have to worry about me not believing you,” he began earnestly. “I know you wouldn’t lie to me unless there was a good reason. I trust you.”

With a deep breath Alexis gained the courage to tell the man she loved the total and utter truth—that she was a vampire slayer’s watcher and they were now living over the Hellmouth.

“Here it goes . . .Jax, vampires are real, deadly real. Because of this the forces of good call one young woman a generation to fight and defeat the forces of evil. This person is the slayer. Along with the slayer comes a watcher, a person to look over and guide her. That’s what I am, and Elizabeth Webber is one of the slayers,” she motioned for him to let her finish. “Normally there is only one slayer, but due to a mishap when Buffy, the first slayer if you will, when she died for a few minutes another slayer was called. The subsequent two slayers have both died, allowing for Elizabeth to be called. Giles was originally Buffy’s slayer, but he became fed up with the watcher’s counsel, so now I’m technically both Buffy and Liz’s watcher. Giles does have a fondness for Buffy and is the best in the game.”

As Alexis finished Jax just stared in shock. He almost wished she was having an affair, at least that was something his mind could grasp. But vampires, watchers, slayer? It was all too much.

“And, and, um . . .why are you all in Port Charles, how come we’ve never heard of it before?” he finally muttered.

Alexis chuckled, everyone always had the same questions. “Well you see Buffy and Giles and their friends are from a town in California called Sunnydale. That is where the Hellmouth was located, and that is the center for all the evil forces in the world. Don’t ask how, but it was moved to Port Charles. And up until now Port Charles has been virtually free of evil . . .and I’m not talking about the mob.”

“So who else knows about this? Does the mayor know or the police?”

“They would be of no help, only the slayer and a select few are capable of fighting vampires and the like. As of now Buffy’s friends know, and Luke and Lucky Spencer. Though they were both accidents. Lucky was almost bitten and Luke . . .”

“Luke Spencer knows? That can’t be good.” Jax groaned, burying his head in his hands. “So where do you have to go now?”

“I have to go to Giles’ place so we can do some research. There has to be a logical reason why the Hellmouth chose Port Charles. With Spike in town and turning others . . .”

“Spike?”

“He’s a vampire who has had many run ins with Buffy in Sunnydale and he’s now in Port Charles,” she paused and looked at her slightly confused husband. “Are you mad I didn’t tell you sooner? You have to understand, this is a very dangerous world, I didn’t want to put you in danger.”

“Mad, I think I’m too confused to be mad,” he laughed. Quickly he kissed her then rose to his feet. “Come on, don’t we have a meeting to get to?”

“What, you aren’t coming. Jax you can’t be involved.”

“Oh yes I am coming. We are married, this is a partnership, and I’m helping. And I won’t let you say otherwise. I promise not to get in the way.”

Alexis sighed and smiled. “Giles is not going to be happy about this. Too many people are involved already.”

“Ah, he needs to relax, I’ll be a great asset to the cause. What exactly am I getting involved in again?” he asked with a nervous laugh.

“Lucky had a problem with the whole vampire’s exist thing too,” she laughed. “After a while, once you’ve seen them up close, you realize they are in fact . . .”

“Real?”

“No, incredibly irritating, they always come around in the least opportune times.”

Jax grinned as he opened the door for her. “Sounds like fun . . .do vampires really die by the ol’ stake in the heart?”

“Yep, it’s the most effective method,” she paused, something occurring to her. “Not all vampires are bad though.”

“They’re not?”

“Well one of them isn’t. His name is Angel, he has his soul so he doesn’t kill. There is some tragic past between he and Buffy but . . .he helps out whenever he can.”

“This is one weird, weird world,” he chuckled as they stepped onto the elevator. “And only getting weirder by the minute.”

~*~

Buffy knocked loudly on the door and looked back at Liz and Lucky. “Nice place he’s got here.”

“Yeah, my aunt owns the building,” Lucky offered, gazing over at Liz. He wished they could have had more time alone to talk about things, but it was obvious that right now, her new calling had to take precedence.

Xander opened the door and scanned the trio, frowning in confusion as he saw Lucky. “Um, Buff? Whey’s New Guy here? I thought this was supposed to be an evil-vanquishing research-fest.”

“Real subtle there, Xander,” she said, rolling her eyes as she pushed her way past him into the apartment. “Lucky knows, although if he hadn’t, we’d have to be explaining it now.”

“Ah, well, welcome to the Scooby Gang, then,” Xander said cheerfully, slapping him on the back as he walked by. “We may be a bit odd, but we’re tres exclusive!”

Lucky just shook his head, figuring they’d explain their strange lingo later.

“So, how’d you find out? Did someone slip up and tell you?” he asked, hoping that was it. He was tired of being the one who screwed up all the time.

“He got bit,” Buffy answered bluntly.

“Ooh, tough break, happens to the best of us. I guess the vamp got slayed before they could finish the job, seeing as how you’re still alive and all... and you were just out in the sun.”

“Elizabeth stopped her, but she got away,” Buffy continued. “She’s one of Spike’s new playthings.”

“Hey, was she one of those vampires we saw last night?” Willow asked, overhearing their conversation from her station at the computer.

“Yes, I believe so,” Giles answered. “The blonde one, right?”

Lucky shrugged. “Carly’s blonde, might have been.”

“Carly, yes, I think that’s what Alexis called her,” Giles mumbled, turning back to his book.

“So, you know her?” Oz asked, coming out of the kitchen with a soda.

“You could say that,” Lucky answered with a smirk. “She’s my cousin.”

“Ew, you mean your cousin tried to feed on you? Man, have they no respect for family?” Cordelia asked, shocked.

“I think that sort of goes along with the whole ‘evil/undead’ thing,” Xander cracked.

“Yes, well, why don’t we start looking for some answers to this Hellmouth problem?” Giles interrupted, becoming tired of the constant bantering.

“Hey, Will, turns out Lucky’s big computer guy. Maybe he can help you out,” Buffy suggested as she walked over to Giles.

“Really? Cool,” Willow said, happy that for once there was another computer-literate person in the room. She waved Lucky over and began rambling excitedly. “I haven’t found anything yet, but I’m still working on cracking some of the networks here. Any tips?”

Lucky shot a longing look back at Liz, who had already started digging through a book with Xander. He would have rather been working with her, but instead he had to open his big mouth and tell Buffy he was good with computers!

“Hey, where’s Alexis?” Liz asked a few minutes later, suddenly realizing her Watcher was absent. As if in response, there was a loud knock on the door.

“How did she do that?” Xander asked, laughing. Since she was closest, Liz got up and answered it, smiling as she saw that Jax was with her.

“Finally told him?” she asked in amusement.

Alexis smiled, pulling Jax into the apartment. “It was either that or let him think I was having an affair with Giles.”

Everyone laughed, except for Cordelia, who’s jaw was on the floor as she watched Jax walk into the room.

“Has he actually met Giles before?” Xander asked, raising an eyebrow curiously. “I mean, no offense man, but you’re not exactly the kind of guy women cheat with.”

Giles rolled his eyes and turned his attention to Alexis. “So he knows, too? First Lucky, then that Spencer fellow last night..”

“Whoa, what Spencer fellow?” Lucky interrupted, figuring Giles had forgotten his last name, or just didn’t make the connection.

“Um, he runs a club in town, very strange man...”

“Your father,” Alexis explained. “Carly and Hannah showed up at Luke’s last night and sort of blew their cover. I had to explain things to him.”

“How did he take it?” he asked, grinning. He could just picture his dad’s reaction to the news that vampires actually existed, and that they weren’t Cassadines.

“About how you’d expect him to react. He didn’t believe me at first, then he refused to believe a member of his own family was one, then he refused to believe that mine weren’t.”

“Yeah, that’s about what I figured.”

“Uh, honey?” Jax asked quietly, glancing around the room in utter confusion. “Who are all these people?”

“Oh, I’m sorry! I completely forgot that you haven’t met them yet. Everybody, this is my husband, Jax. Jax, this is Xander, Cordelia, Buffy, Oz and Willow. You’ve met Giles, and you already know Liz and Lucky....”

“And I’m sure you’ll meet Angel and Spike sooner or later,” Xander added dryly.

“Interesting names...” Jax mused.

“They’re from California,” Alexis offered, pulling him over to where Giles was sitting. “Okay, so what have you found?”

“Unfortunately, nothing,” he sighed, closing the book he had been studying all morning and rubbed his eyes, then looked up at them, his manners kicking into high gear. “Would you like some tea?”

“What did I tell you?” Buffy whispered to Liz, who giggled quietly.

“Do you have any coffee?” Alexis asked. “Jax isn’t much of a tea man.”

“Really...um, yes, I believe there might be some in the kitchen.”

“Go ahead, honey, I’m going to see if I can help here,” she said, smiling warmly at him and nudging him towards the kitchen. Jax sighed, feeling completely useless.

“Let me guess, all you have is Taster’s Choice?” he joked, looking around in the cabinets.

Giles frowned and turned to look at him. “How did you know that?”

Jax pulled out the can of coffee and laughed. “Call it a hunch.” He quickly made himself a cup and returned to the living room, sitting down next to his wife. “What can I do?”

She grinned and pointed to a stack of old books. “Grab one of those and start reading. Look for anything that mentions the Hellmouth or a reason why it might have chosen Port Charles as its new home.”

Suddenly, Willow squealed and hugged Lucky. “You are my hero!”

“What? What did he do?” Buffy asked, hurrying over to them as a slightly jealous Liz and Oz watched in bewilderment.

“He just broke into the mainframe of...what did you call it?”

“ELQ,” Lucky said proudly.

“Really?” Jax asked, moving to stand up. Alexis quickly grabbed his arm and shook her head.

“Down, boy. Now’s not the time for corporate raiding.”

“You’re no fun,” he pouted, reaching for another book.

“So, what’s ELQ, some sort of evil syndicate?” Xander asked

“That sounds about right,” Jax joked, ducking as Alexis moved to smack him.

“No, it’s a large corporation that is centered in Port Charles. They have a crane out in the harbor with a video camera mounted on top of it that constantly scans the area. By cracking into the mainframe, we’re able to see what it’s filming,” Lucky explained. Liz walked up behind him, resting a hand lightly on his shoulder as she peered at the screen.

“Wyndemere!” she gasped.

“And the docks,” he added, reaching up and covering her hand with his. “Now, I’m far from being an expert here, but I’d say if there was anywhere in this city that creatures of the night would hang out, it’s those two places. They’re both pretty dark and creepy, even in daylight!”

“Very nice!” Alexis complimented.

“Yes, good work,” Giles added distractedly, looking back at the book in front of him. There was something there that was bugging him, but he just couldn’t quite figure it out yet. “Um, Buffy, maybe you should patrol there tonight.”

“Sounds like a plan. Liz, why don’t you take the park? That way we can cover more ground,” Buffy suggested, returning to her position on the floor by Oz.

“By myself?” Liz asked nervously, unconsciously tightening her grip on Lucky’s shoulder. “Are you sure? I mean, I haven’t exactly been doing this for very long yet.”

“You’ll be fine, honey,” Alexis assured her. “But if you’d like, I can come with you.”

“Honey. Giles, how come you never call me honey?” Buffy pouted.

“Hmm...what?” Giles asked, looking up from his book in confusion. “Did you say something, Buffy?”

“Nevermind,” she grumbled, slamming the book in front of her. “No one ever calls me cute pet names.”

“What, didn’t Angel have little names for you?” Cordelia teased.

She shook her head. “No, although when he was evil, I’m sure he had a few. I doubt they’re repeatable, though.”

“Hey, look, it’s got a clear view of the parapet!” Lucky said with a laugh, pointing to the shot of Wyndemere that was on the computer screen. Liz and Alexis chuckled, while Jax just shook his head.

“What’s a parapet? One of those new electronic animal-thingies?” Xander asked.

“It’s just a fancy word for a balcony,” Alexis explained. “Too bad that camera wasn’t there when Katherine fell.”

“Which time?” Jax asked with a smirk.

“Either one, really. I had both cases.”

“What do you mean, which time? She fell more than once?” Willow asked.

“Yeah. The first time was during her engagement party to Stefan. She died, but came back during her murder trial. Then a few years later, she fell again right before her wedding to Nikolas. I think she’s really dead this time,” Lucky replied, watching the screen for signs of movement in the house.

“She died twice?” Buffy asked. “I mean, I know it happens, but still...”

“Wait, didn’t you say that Nikolas was Stefan’s son?” Xander questioned, a slightly disgusted look on his face. Liz nodded, trying to hide a smile as she realized what he must be thinking. “You mean, she almost married both him and his son? Am I alone when I say....eyagh!?”

Everyone chuckled at his colorful way of putting things, while Buffy shook her head in disbelief. “And I thought Sunnydale was weird!”

~*~

“Insipid simpleton, who does he think I am? Turning me into a vampire, like I wanted this to happen?” Stefan grumbled as he stepped off the launch onto the docks. “Not like I went out in the sun often or went to church, but it’s the principal of the matter. How am I ever supposed win my darling Lasha’s heart if all I want to do is drink her blood?”

“Father? Are you talking to yourself?” Nikolas asked, appearing from the shadows.

“Nikolas, my son!” he exclaimed.

“What’s going on? You look . . .are you alright? You look paler than normal.”

Stefan swallowed hard, hoping Nikolas didn’t know his secret. “I’m fine, fine . . .what are you doing here?”

“I was just taking a walk, what are you doing here?”

“I had to get out of the house . . .they’re going to drive me insane,” he muttered.

“Who?”

“What?”

“Who are going to drive you insane?”

“What on earth are you talking about?” Stefan covered, eyeing his son’s neck. If Spike turned him into a vampire, Stefan would easily be able to turn his own son. Yes, that is what he’d do. Finally, the Cassadines would take over, would rule all the world. Or at least Port Charles. No more taking orders from Spike or anyone. That is what he’d do.

“Who were you talking about father? You said ‘they’re going to drive me insane’. Who are they? Only you and Mrs. Lansbury, so who are going to drive you insane?”

“All these inane questions, what is driving them?”

“Why are you answering my questions with questions?” Nikolas retorted, quite perplexed by his father’s attitude.

“Stop doing that.”

“Doing what?” Nikolas asked. “Just tell me who is bothering you.”

“People who are staying with me. Anything else?”

“Who are staying with you. Do they have names?”

“Why are you talking to me like I’m a simpleton, like I’m Luke Spencer?”

“Because you are acting like a simpleton. Now answer my question, who’s staying with you?”

“A man named . . .it’s not important. He’s a foreigner and he has two exceedingly tiresome women with him. Though the blonde is . . .” his voice trailed off. “Anything else?”

“No, but maybe you should see Gail Baldwin.”

“Why, is something wrong at the hospital? Am I neglecting my duties? It’s just that I can’t make it to the office during the day anymore. Can’t they understand I have other priorities?”

“Like what?”

“Sleeping . . .isn’t that obvious? Now tell me this instant why I need to speak with Gail Baldwin,” Stefan ordered, growing tired with the conversation.

“Because you are obviously insane. Father, did something happen, did you hit your head?”

“Of course something happened,” he grumbled. “Now we have other issues to address.”

“What now?”

“Son, there is something I must tell you, it will open up a New World to you,” he grinned, inching closer to his son.

“Please tell me,” Nikolas groaned.

“I have been given a great gift, the key to the future,” Stefan stated proudly, moving even closer to Nikolas.

“Father, you know I want nothing to do with the family and all those sordid details, please leave me out of it,” Nikolas begged.

“But we can do this together. Side by side,” Stefan took Nikolas face into his hands.
