From what I understand, the study pointed out that cats are smart and do understand, but don't necessarily do as they are told.
I think that cats undersand a lot of our spoken language, but sometimes they do ignore what we say when they don't feel like it. They'd rather have us to what THEY want! Cats are not servile.
But they do care about us, it's obvious. I've lived with cats for 35 years so I know how much love they can give to the humans they own.
I'm pretty sure that Léto already loves me, and she comes when I call her. Even Tibère who is still so afraid of being petted cares about what I say. When I call his name and tell him not to scratch the chair in the living room, he immediately stops...
