Subject: Well, my computer's HD died....

Luckily, I had everything backed up. But I also had an idea that the HD would die as much as a month ago when I did a check of things. So, just to be ready I went to W00T and bought a refurb'd Dell for $400. It's not bad even though it has Win 8.1 (I prefer Win 7). And while I haven't restored much of any files, including bookmarks I've managed to find a good many of the websites I usually peruse.

I've got to get my WiFi system back running now, the dang thing went out in the spring when lightning hit the house. Heck, this house has cost me some big money. Everything that could leak in the garage has this summer. First it was the working water heater, then the water heater just used as a dump tank for the heat pump, then it was the heat pump (thankfully mostly under warranty), and finally the water softener went completely out. The worst was the original water heater. I usually have a water bill of $20 a month, but the water heater went out on the weekend and I didn't notice it - the bill was $100!! The people at the town hall even called to see if I knew I had a leak. They were pretty nice too, they halved the bill.

Win 8 isn't so bad, except I don't like the (NON)START button nor the idea that you seemingly cannot drag or copy and past icons to the desktop. I got used to using certain program links on the desktop. Anyone know how to get them back there?

...

Have been Windows free for 4 years now, at least at home. Maybe try Googling the question, there are usually online forums that offer tips.

This computer is devoid of programs.

I bought and downloaded a light version of MS-Office.

Had to download Adobe Shockwave and PDF-Reader. And a few other things.

Now I have to figure out how to manage all my backups. They need merging, I've got a 2 Tb HD and the dang thing is almost full! Guess I ought to merge them before I restore them.

Still don't know if I will get a new HD for the old one. Somehow I don't think so. Got to upgrade my genealogy program too. Not having that at hand is giving me the genealogy-withdrawal DTs!
