Beyond Russian bigotry and homophobia. I think they may have a terrorist attack.

My state - Indian - is going to vote through an amendment to the state constitution about marriage next monday. Then after the next election of legislators they have to vote it again, then it goes to the people for a vote. Each time it takes only a simple majority. Thereafter, discrimination will be written into the state constitution - if it passes. Could be by 2016, the year the people would vote, that enough may not vote for such an amendment.

But the Republicans did something underhanded. Put the amendment up before the Justice committee to be voted to go to the full legislature. But they DID NOT HAVE THE VOTES! 3 Republicans were going to vote against it. So, they futzed it and sent it to another committee, and rammed through testimony for that committee then voted it out for the full legislature's vote.

Yet Canada is still functioning quite nicely, thank you.

Sadly, I think a lot of it is due to the fact that we are increasingly a secular state. If countries and legislators were less tied to their religious roots, descrimination would be invalidated a lot more often. I know the saying is that money is the root of all evil but I think religion is a tool used to wield a lot of sins in itself, like greed, homophobia, etc.

As for Sochi, it's become public that some of the elite level athletes on the men's hockey team are leaving their families at home. That says something right there, I can't fault athletes at any level for wanting to compete on a world stage but to worry about the safety of your family would be hard. I think security will be heavy but protests may also happen, may be a cause for concern in case family/friends get in the way of the police by accident, etc.

Ugh.
