When Darryl asked on the phone whether Dewey was crying we didn't need to seem him to believe it was true. Poor Dewey.

I too loved Boy'd line to Raylan "Raylan Givens, are you flattering me?", but my favourite two scenes -- or in this case two shots for they didn't have memorable lines -- of the episode had to be Tim and Raylan standing on top of the cars while aiming at the dog, and Tim and Boyd playing Scrabble (the perfect game for Boyd!!!!).

I also liked the detail of Raylan staying a law man in bed and using his new lover's "pillow talk" to come up with a plan to fuck up with Darryl Crowe.

Johnny being in league with Mr Big Beard is interesting, and the fact he didn't fall for Boyd's speech was good too.

I expect them to get in touch with the Crowes, so Boyd will have a Crowe problem too!

Art knows, it's obvious from the look on his face when he left Detroit. Raylan is going to pay for crossing that line last year!

But before that, I want to see Raylan save Dewey and Boyd from the bad Crowes.

So I am not sure if he is going to be saving anyone. I think it's going to make for a road of redemption for him in the last season. Though the redemption could come with Raylan's salvation of those two, and still taking some heat himself. So we may be channeling the same thoughts in that respect.

I wonder why Raylan fails to see that Boyd couldn't be moving up the criminal staircase as a 'boss.'

The way Raylan see Boyd or even Johnny is biased because of their youth. Johnny will forever be the one with whom Raylan played football, and Boyd his coal buddy, no matter what they do. "Crime boss" doesn't fit in the picture that is printed in Raylan's mind.

I don't think that Dewey will be a major character next year, and I expect the Crowe arc to end this season and a final episode with Raylan losing his badge, and I expect a final Raylan/Boyd showdown for the final season next year.

Taking Boyd down might be what actually will save Raylan's career eventually, or what you called his redemption as a law man.

But what does that say about Raylan himself? Selling Boyd short on that account does the same to Raylan. So maybe that is that point of maturity that Raylan himself has to come into. Realizing that Boyd can be the crime boss, and Raylan can be the father and perhaps, so too, the husband.

I also don't think Dewey will be much around next year (IF he is alive after this season), but I expect a possible cameo part, sort of a send-off to the show which looks at a number of the characters we've seen over the years. But next year will definitely be the one when Boyd and Raylan are in direct conflict. Something makes me think it may end in a coal mine. But I am not sure that either may make it out alive.

Boyd will lose and Raylan will make it.

Despite his flaws, Raylan Givens is a white hat at heart, a law man.

Bad guys are idiots in Elmore's world. Boyd is smarter than most of them but still makes many mistakes, as proved this season, and will be outsmarted by the law men eventually.

Yes, Raylan will in the end overcome Boyd.

But at the same time I think they are setting up Raylan for a fall from 'federal' grace. That is his days as a US Marshall are numbered.

I keep thinking about the end of last season: "You'll never leave Harlan alive."

I have this crazy idea that the ultimate struggle between Rayland and Boyd (with Wynn Duffy perhaps) will somehow involve other transgression by Raylan which will get him booted out of the Marshall's Service. I tend to think that the show will end with Raylan as the Sheriff of Harlan.

On the other hand, maybe the idea is for Raylan to get out of Harlan alive. One of the two is going to happen. He overcomes the big obstacle - Boyd - but in doing so is brought down and remains in Harlan; or Raylan is exalted. Or both.

The realist in me believes that Raylan has to be brought down in some respect; but at the same time becoming a 'justified ruler' in another. That is where I think becoming the Sheriff of Harlan comes in .

. . .
