3. Moriarty's resurrection? In the finale's closing minutes, every screen in England was hijacked with a broadcast of Moriarty's face, accompanied by the words, "Did you miss me?" As far as we knew, he had blown his brains out on that rooftop at the end of last season.

We turned to series producers Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue as well as Abbington for more answers. Here's what they had to say:

We see the possible return of Moriarty (Andrew Scott) at the end of the episode, even though we thought we saw him die last season. Why did you want to bring him back?
Steven Moffat: We always knew what we were going to do with Moriarty. This has been the game plan since the end of Series 1 when we realized we had a crack on our hands with Andrew. This is something that the whole series has been building to. I won't say what it is we're doing, but we have plans. And I'm pretty bloody certain those plans will please people.

[> Did anyone notice the music at the end of the show when the three were standing on the terrace at Appledore?? -- Lij, Monday, February 03, 06:31:21am (adsl-99-102-187-151.dsl.bltnin.sbcglobal.net/99.102.187.151)

I remember that musical theme that was playing when they released it in December. One of the composer's influences in the accompanying notes was listed as Enio Morricone who wrote the music for the 'spaghetti westerns' that starred Clint Eastwood.

The theme on the Appledore terrace was very much reminiscent of the music from the shoot-out scene in the middle of the war cemetery in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." You knew what was coming.

Sherlock was the 'Man with No Name' - aka Blondie - "The Good."

John was Tuco - "The Ugly." Sorry, John.

And Magnusson was "Angel Eyes" (Sentenza in the Italian script). Magnusson and Lee Van Cleef's Angel Eyes even have that similar look and manner. Did Angel Eyes piss on Tuco once? I cannot remember.

But the music on the terrace and the music at the cemetery shoot-out was so similarly thematic that you knew what was coming. As in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, where it was Angel Eyes in psychological control with the memories he held over Tuco, so it was Magnusson in pscychological control over John. But you knew that only 'Blondie' - Sherlock would be the one in final physical control in the situation at the end.

So one has to wonder if the writing for Sherlock as well as the music was inspired by The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I for one really flashed to that scene when hearing the musical theme.

Too bad there wasn't a grave of gold to dig up.

. . .
