The man killed - Ed Patrick - was my 2nd cousin's husband. She's my 2nd cousin from my both my mother and my dad's side of the family. On my dad's side of the family she's also the 2nd cousin of my 2nd cousin who I share-crop with. And I know that's my cousin's International Harvestor tractor in the vid. Ed has worked on and off for my cousin in farming. So, I'm sure Ed was going down to my river farm. I just cannot imagine, everyone stops or at least slows for that crossing it's so rough plus the road drops 15 feet or so on the other side of the tracks.

Damn... I don't know what to say to Mildred.

I talked to my cousin, with whom I sharecrop, early this morning. He says he was on my farm with his small bulldozer clearing logs and debri from the fields out on the river bend. Ed was bringing the tractor and cultivator up to the farm and then they were going home together. My cousin said he didn't know of the wreck until he drove out near dark and saw the wreck.

He says a video on the train shows that the tractor slowed as it came upon the crossing and it may have been that Ed was trying to back up when he was hit. The engineer said he was blowing the train's horn constantly.

I gather there wasn't any barrier on the crossing, wasn't it?

Crossings are such dangerous places. They should all be secured with either gates or tunnels.

After crossing the railroad Savoree Road (which is gravel) scarcely goes another half-kilometer before it ends at my river farm after crossing a culvert over a ditch. If you want to see it in Google Earth it is at:

38°46'37.63"N, 87°28'32.25"W

There are only three landowners after the crossing. Althoffs own the land between the bridge and the ditch on either side of the road except for the south where a wedge of land is mine tucked up under the ditch. It's Hendrickson Farms north of the extension of the road to the levee/river (road extension is my private road) and the rest is mine.

So it's not a heavily travelled road, unless you count the people who are trespassing to fish, hunt, or find an out-of-the-way place to make meth (a la Breaking Bad). It's just a farm road that gets very little traffic. There was more traffic back in the 50s and 60s when my dad sold fishing permits for $20/year to Mariah (aka Maria) Pond.
