In reply to: Gabs 's message, "If you've ever spent a second thought on subjects like politics, civic society, progress, human nature, globalization, justice, development, ethics, market logic and/or coexistance...." on Tuesday, August 27, 08:55:02am

Can't even remember where I read it (Adbusters latest issue) but it was talking about how Western civilization's take on the humanities and society in general has been the structure by which so many other cultures have been analyzed, thus it's hard for us to really understand how other societies work and we end up imposing our cultural bias on them. A good example from where I live is First Nations culture, which is very different from what you and I have been raised in and how they view each other and their place in the world is slowly being completely eroded to the Western norm. Which has caused a lot of problems over the years since their take on justice, civic society and progress (to name just a few) were far,far different and thus a lot of abuse from our determindly patriachal system took place.

All good things to be mindful of, eh?

I was lucky enough to attend a seminar organized by two Canadians who identify as part of the First Nations, and hearing about their rights (or lack of), the denunciation or even the fact that the Canadian law decides who is and isn't indigenous was really eye-opening. The plight of autochtones in South America is even worse, I believe...

...and that's just on aspect of the Westerisation of the world, amplified by globalization. It's profoundly disturbing for me to speak with young children here who have dreams like being president of the USA or marrying a white woman and living in France, etc. They've all already internalized a cultural hierarchy, how could that even be changed?
