Subject: A few months ago the idea of having 100 followers of my Geology Pinterest board....

...... had me a little dumbfounded. But now just this morning I got my 465th follower. So I continue to get followers and they continue to inspire me to keep my Geology board fresh. But it was the name of that 465th follower that surprised me - the Utah Geological Survey! I must be doing something right with the board.

I find that having something like this to share and people showing a lot of interest in it is so much fun. I got started on Instagram about a year ago and absolutely love sharing pictures and seeing pictures from around the world.

Can you "join" the service without downloading the "app?"

If so, I haven't seen it. And some institutions I follow on Twitter are posting most of their pics on Instagram. But to see an Instagram pic you have to be a member. And it seems that to be a member you have to have the app. And I find the whole thing rather confusing.

Only works on the iOS or Android platforms though. Not like Facebook, which I guess is more universal but not a user so could not say for sure.

I don't understand the exclusivity.... it's certainly not what the Net is about.

You also have to realise the current market in computing is very geared towards the mobile market. When you realise that Apple sold 9 million new iPhones in three days with the release of iPhone 5S and the new, cheaper iPhone 5C, it's staggering to think of how many smart phones are now out there. Can you imagine any company selling 9 million PCs in that period of time? So most of the app market is geared towards smart phones since they sell fast and have a much faster turnover rate than PCs as well. Between work and immediate family, only about five people don't have a smart phone of some kind and three of those are my mom and two sisters!!

And yes, it's a phone but it's a smart phone. Instagram works because the vast majority of pictures are taken with the user's phone camera, posting is fast and feedback is easy too. I have some people I follow who do use SLR cameras but they are pretty few, mostly because you have to get the photos onto a computer and then onto the phone to post them.

As of this month Instagram says they have about 150 million active monthly users. That's a lot of people buying in, I never do anything to identify myself personally and no geo-tags either, aside from a little spammy bout once and a while of new followers trying to get you to follow back and buy stuff, it's been a pretty positive experience for me.
